UV Mapping

#1

Hi

I am a new user to Blender

I am left with a recurring problem: UV Mapping…I have read MANY tuts on the subject, but the one thing I am frustrated about, is the way to apply UV Maps - Is it realy not possible to use this process:

Model a mesh object

Export wired flattened UV map of the entire mesh object

Goto photoshop and paint over the wired UV map

Load into Blender the painted UV map

Project the entire map on to the mesh model, and the painted texture fits accordingly to how it was painted

Is it realy not possible to use the “formula” in Blender??

I hope you can help me!

Cheers

The workflow you cite sounds like something people do all the time. I think I’ve done that.

There must be one specific step that is bothering you. You need to tell us about a very specific problem you are having.

my problem is that this feature/process of creating UV Maps for meshes should be so VERY simple; I find it very frustrating in Blender that the merrely only way to apply a UV map, for instance onto a game character, is by selecting the individual faces, load the picture/texture onto that/them, and then shape the faces accordingly to how it should fit with the texture…

now, why can´t you export a wired UV map of the entire mesh, with all the faces flattened out, for instance of a game character, paint over it in photoshop as a texturemap, load the new over-painted UV map into Blender, and select ALL faces, and apply the new texturemap…

Years back, as many did, I started out fooling around with Bryce and Poser, and I refer to a similar process to apply texturemaps - correct me if i´m wrong, but many artists in here are posting 3d character models with entire texturemaps of thiere models - it is those type of texturemaps i´m curries about, why I can´t get to with in Blender

ok - what I seek, is a way to paint over an exportet UV map of my mesh in photoshop, save the painted map, and project it back onto my mesh…and Voila!! it fits…:buttrock:

Am I realy talking noncence here?? :surprised

I am willing to illustrate my problem to, if it might make anymore sence…

I’ve done this myself many times, just never in blender.
If you try posting in the blender subforum you might have better luck,
not sure how many of the blender gurus that hang out in wings-land

If you don’t mind using Wings tho,it has integrated UV unwrapping.
Just unwrap the mesh, export the map,
paint it,and then import it again.
:applause:

Hey, you got a point there…

i´ll try that, sounds just like what i´m desperate for!! Thanks!

Right click on the model you want to UV map. Press f-key for face select. (all faces are selected by default, press a-key if not). Then press u-key to make UV map, select the way of unwrapping the model (cylinder is often nice). While all faces are still selected, change from 3D Viewport to the UV/Image Editor view (the cross button, + , on the far left).

Take a screenshot of the UV map, go into Photoshop, paste, crop, paint texture, save, open in blender while in the UV/Image Editor view.

If you go back to the 3D Viewport, and deselect some faces, the faces will “disappear” from the UV map too (only visually, the map does not get deleted, very useful for working on parts of the uv map). Use b-key to select several vertecies in UV map, and g-key to grab/move them and s-key to scale. Quite nice to work with actually

Personally i use Wings3D and UVMapper Classic (http://www.uvmapper.com) and edit the map inside Blender.

w/o selecting all the faces. I do it all the time. It’s a little hidden by the wacky interface in my estimation.

You are very right there markyjerky. I just tried it and it works without selecting any faces. It then takes the whole mesh and makes an UV for it.

Based on that, I tried to select 2 faces of a sphere, press u-key, UV Construction -> From Window, select 2 different faces of the sphere, , press u-key, UV Construction -> From Window, select all faces a-key, go into UV/Image Editor, and waddayouknow, a nicely created UV map. Oh the joy! Its even better than the UV abilities of most highend apps.

Now I just need to figure out the “X-Ray” issue when tweaking in Wings 3D and Ill be very happy modeller.

well well well, whata ya know! It seems like we have brought a hidden subject to the surface! :wip:

I knew Blender had this work-around feature availeble…thanks guys, now I can actualy begin bring some advanced texturing to my works - top notch!!
