UV Editing, strange behavior

#1

Hi All,

I’ve been messing around with Wings3D for almost a day now  What I’m using it for though is the UV unwrap feature. It looks very promising, and I’m very impressed. A few things though that I’m wondering about.

1.) While editing I might need to leave my computer, so I save the model… but the UV editing I’ve done so far isn’t saved??? And I can’t unfold it yet since it’s not done (and therefor complains about holes).

2.) I followed this tutorial
http://mywebpages.comcast.net/jmandmc/uvmap/uvmap.html
But I did not see my groups show up in the outliner as it did in this tutorial (all I see is my materials).

3.) When I right click and chose “AuvChart1” and then after a while I might run out of “AuvChart”, how do I make more of these?

Care to share their comments with those of us who don’t do IRC?

I’ve been using Wings to model for a while, but have yet to use the AutoUV feature. The project I started using wings on only required group colors and not mapping, so I’m curious about these questions as well.

I’ll try my best to explain.

1.) Select a portion that you want as a seperate UV section (in polygon mode). Assign a new material to the selection.

Do that for all sections

2.) Mark edges that will mark the ‘cut’ for the UV. Meaning where it will start to unfold. A head could have that from the top of the head down to the back of the neck (much like how a cylidrical projection would work). Mark edges for all sections.

3.) Set those edges to ‘HARD’

4.) Select the hole model in ‘element’ mode and right click to chose 'UV Mapping (experimental).

5.) Now in the UV editor, right click and chose ‘Continue -> Unfolding’

This way Wings will use the materials and the hard edges to create the UV mapp. This also allows you to save between working with models (which the UV editor doesn’t).

I’m only in my second day of using Wings3D, so bare with me if I don’t make a lot of sense.

hum…
i’ve tried the uv mapping.
funny…
i wasn’t able to do it the way you were saying , or writting, but, what i did was that!

i created a figure, simple.
assigned colors to certain areas.

selected the whole object and clicked uv mapping, experimental

then, simply, unfold.
it unfolded my colored parts.

that is VERY cool

now…
waht about seams???
i wonder aboutthat.
the hard edges would go for that i guess.

and, what is all the rest ?
where is there a good tutorial on uv mapping?
i mean… there are a lot of boxes in the wings uv mapping tool.
what are they all for??

also… anybody knows how i can import an obj into wings??
doesn’t seem to want to cooperate!!
is this a problem with my way of doing it , or is it that it simply does not work?

Hey StefanA, nice to see you playing with Wings.

Have you had any luck bringing the UV’s over to XSI yet. I have tried (half-assed) a couple of times using .obj, but have had little success.

no problems here. When you export the OBJ file chose the options and unclick all the options. Should look like the image below

and XSI obj import like this

that has worked for me
