Using Modo models and Messiah: Tried the Box controller tutorial...

#1

Greetings,

I am considering a purchase of Messiah and decided to try the steps outlined in the box controller video. I use Modo for modelling and decided to see if I could use models from Modo in Messiah. So, I downloaded Messiah workstation. I exported the individual morph targets for the “Old Man” model in Modo. I setup a box controller exactly like the video outlines. The only way I have been able to get it to work is by Freezing the model geometry and exporting from Modo as .OBJ files. I tried LWO and it did not work. I tried freeze and no-freeze. I tried turning sub-patch off before exporting. Nothing seemed to work on the LWO format front.

Has anyone been successful at using LWO files with Morph targets in Messiah?

Thanks,
Roy

umm yeah I use lwo files all the time. although you have to keep in mind that modo supports ngons and edge weights and messiah doesnt. so make sure there are no 2 point polys or Ngons before you load them. (thats why freezing works)

Thanks stooch.

I think I figured it out. Tell me if this makes sense…

I needed to apply the morph targets to the base of the mesh before I export each one to LWO format. Just selecting the morph in modo so it is visible in modo and then exporting doesn’t do it. Now that I am typing this it does make sense. Each time I exported… the base mesh never changed. Duh!

there is an script for lw-modeler that saves each endomorph as an individual file, not sure about an existing script for modo , but it could be possible to do a bach script that does that…

I think I found a problem before where, if you add a layer in modo, and save your work to a .lwo file, it can cause messiah to crash on load. I think the layer had to be empty too. Not sure if it still happens with 2.5 though, and I really didnt follow through inspecting that problem much, but “empty layers” might be problematic.
