using image with 3d stroke

Hi, I,m very new to all of this and I saw this tutorial on youtube http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Vkm69eiNDCg where he draws a logo with 3d stroke.
He copys the logo from Illustrator and then pastes it in as a mask on a solid in After Effects but when I try to do the same It wont work. I dont the option to paste anything in AE. Is there a way to fix this or maybe another way of getting my image as a mask on a solid?
