Uplift Universe - Video Entry: Tyson Ibele
Nice one! I learnt a fair bit watching that ‘making of’!
I still stand by what I said, get a team together and make a feature length. It would be awesome and scary.
I was just wondering
What kind of camera did you use for your short? What focal length? Did you change it or used one through out the movie?
For example in maya there are presets like :
35 mm full aperture
35 mm tv projection
Vista Vision
Amazing short, and killer making of feature!
Im only just starting to get into the animation side of MAX (currently in ArchViz), and your work is definitely an inspiration!
Hell, as we speak I think im sucking up your webpages bandwidth and downloading all your tutorials. Sorry.
ONTO THE ENTRY! The thing I love about this is that it works fantastically as a short, but feels like it could be a scene from something bigger. Im not sure where the story could expand to, or where it came from-but its definitely there! The idea of an alien clawing off some poor scientists face, and wearing it like a mask, it disturbing, freaky, and freaking badass.
I love that you never quite get a full on shot of what the alien looks like. Just these hints…out of focus pans, and horrid sounds. Even tho it has a ‘hand’, somehow I dont picture it is a bipedal creature…but rather this mass of tangled veins, sinew, muscle, and flesh. Kinda like turning someone inside out, and running them through a grinder.
I am a massive MASSIVE fan of cheesy b-grade horrors like The Blob, and The Thing, and Slither. I love the cheap thrills of those movies…seeing someones head explode, or some get eaten…horror movies that are made for the fun of being horror movies. I think that your short captures those moments amazingly.
Like I said, Im busy attempting to get into animation, and will look at your work as a constant source of inspiration!
I think that this challenge has 2 clear winners in the individual category, and I definitely dont envy the judges!
Well done on a short you can definitely be proud of!

Pyke! Thanks a lot man! Your comments mean a lot as you’re a super talented CG artist yourself (I’m a little jealous that I don’t have access to a camera…as I would have loved to try some match moving shots like the ones you did).
And I’m glad the intended feeling of the short came through
Was definitely going for that “show you enough to make you want more” feeling. It’s kind of weird having this as a “short film” as it seems more like a short sequence from a larger piece (although I’ll agree that I’m not sure what it would be about ;))
I should have the final version uploaded shortly…I’ve been procrastinating but now I’ve gotta get my act together!
Miyamoto: I just used max’s default lens (I believe it’s somewhere around 45) and then added some lens warp in AE (using the bulge distorter).
Software: 3ds max,After Effects,mental ray,Photoshop
Well everyone, it’s been a long difficult ride…but it’s good to be done! Here is my final entry
Thanks for all your comments and support during the creation process! I hope to use what I learned in this challenge for the challenges I enter in the future.
Best of luck to all other participants during the judging phase!
