The Blood-Cells was no Big Deal, i build this in XSI.
A simple Particle system with Object Instances deformed on a Curve.
That means the Particle Animation follow the Curve.
I hope, I knew your question answering

I think i am done with Base Topology in XSI, next Step ZBrush for some Tweaks.

My first Choice was to Render it in XSI with 3Delight because Fast SSS, MotionBlur and Displacement.
After some Tests i turned back to Mantel Ray and used Fast SSS Skin + Displacement + Bump + Normalmap.
I Playing currently with Shaders.

What can I say!
Rendered in XSI with MR.
Very heavy Displacement, every Character
split in Different Passes.
Out of Memory!
Perhaps too much Contrast.
