Just figuring out the colors here. Putting in the characters later, as soon as I figure out how I’m going to go about painting the landscape.

I decided to expand the back ground, but found I didn’t like how the woman looked anymore. I decided to replace her with a little girl, with a less realistic style. I’m not sure if its an improvement, but I think the woman was too small and insignificant looking. The little girl stands out better.

I really like the atmosphere and technique of the lastest wip. I keep on coming back to this thread.

Just my opinion, but composition-wise, the girl seems to be too close to the edge of picture. Makes it seem that the landscape is the focus of the picture and not the two characters.

Another idea that popped up while I was taking a break. I doubt I’ll use it, but you never know. The mood is much nicer in this one.

Nice stuff! I also prefer the second concept sketch. The dog/alien reminds me of Yoda though. :scream: I’ll keep an eye on this one and look forward to where you go next. Good luck!

All right, I’m saving the second sketch, seeing if anything spontanous comes to me, but I don’t want to abandon my first idea. I shifted the canvas around and moved the two figures, though not completely to the center. I’m trying to make the light follow a path to the characters(still working on it…). The lighting is a lot lighter now, but I think it’s good for a more hopeful mood. Used Michelangelo’s statue of Giuliano(I think) for reference.

Adding details now. The cathedral in the background looks REALLY weird now. If it doesn’t work out, I might just replace it with a tree or something. The background will have to wait, but any landscape suggestions are very welcome. Also, the statue looks like it’s grown a beard.

I just got back from a trip to washington and saw the really pretty cherry blossoms there (perfect blooming time). I don’t like the original painting anymore (or the concept, for that matter. Too dark), but now I’ve combined the first two, and I like how its truning out. I want the alien to look fierce, but cute. Kind of just contrasting the two characters. This ones also more focused on the figures, to make interaction clearer (and my life easier).

I was unhappy with the 3rd concept, and have finally settled for this one. I hope. Funny thing is, this is really what I was originally going for. Bleh.
