Uplift Universe - Image Entry: Rupert Dolby

Huh, I thought I had posted since you made the sweeping background changes but I guess I didn’t. Congratulations on finishing this piece. It came out terrific! I really like everything with the darker sky, as it really focuses the attention on the characters well. And the characters - and all of the details on the table - look wonderful. The aliens, the earth-creatures, the food… and I especially love the little mini-jug-shaped robot in the front. Nice work!

As for judging times, don’t hold your breath. It always takes a long time - there are a LOT of entries, a lot of good entries - and only 2 big awards - and in this case the video competition is still going on for another month. I think we have a long while to wait!

Hey Walrus thanks for stopping by and thanks for the compliments!

I had a big battle with the colour which in retrospect could have been averted by a simple couple of colour roughs in the beginning, but you have to learn sometime :banghead: . I still think the colour could be more subtle but I think I just gave up and got too tired of looking at the same thing so often.

I think ultimately I’m happy with the way it turned out, the only thing I don’t like is the style of paint application - if you zoom into the details its not a pretty sight  . But I think in future with use of the smudge tool and perhaps using painter, I could get more life into the painting style.

I had a look at your Walrus Droppings blog - (awesome stuff, your Dominance War guy is a winner  ) I really enjoyed your working process. One question - once you have gone through your process do you flatten the image and then paint in the final details? Or do you paint the final small detail changes back into each layer?

Its a nice smooth workflow that reminds me of how a neo-classical painter would approach a work.

Anyway thanks and best of luck,

Rupert
