It’s coming together quite nicely, I love the idea of the stiffness in such a straight up dinner, like one of those tedious charity events in some films. I only miss a bit more of room at the bottom of the comp, maybe… Anyhow, great work so far. Looking forward to seeing the colouring!
Uplift Universe - Image Entry: Rupert Dolby
hello rupert this a very nice thread!
i have only one crit i think your sketches are simply fantastic theres so much energy in it and i feel u loose that energy in the latest version …if i can do a suggestion u sholuld bring nonsense in the lines …less straight logic lines in perspective but keep this crazy dynamism u have in your sketches …there 's an old school belgian comic drawer called "Franquin " he was a master to keep energy like ur sketches and come with a final render in the line…i know is easy to say and i also know that is maybe one of the most hardest things to do…anyway good luck rupert!
kukart: Many thanks.
harachte: Thank you, when I started the piece my idea was to draw a final line-drawing from a rough sketch and then stick to it rigidly. In the past I have tended to meander, pushing paint around endlessly, with no firm guidelines. I thought it best to do it this way for this highly detailed image. Anyway I got lazy at the end and didn’t finish the linework perfectly.
I see what you mean about the bottom of the picture - will adds some more at the bottom if I have time.
Jassar: Thank you.
Jaba153: Thanks for the great advice - I had a look at some of Franquin’s stuff and I see what you mean - absolutely agree with you the drawing is feeling quite stiff. Whether I can do something about it at this late stage is another question… I am hoping to give it that energy again when I paint in the colour…
CartoonBox: Thanks for the support.
It gets better and better each time I look. It looks great already, but I reckon it’ll be a knockout when it’s done. Looking forward to the colour stages now
asparta, Pearlyking, Huggy; Thanks a lot guys your support is much appreciated!
chandro: Thanks a lot and yes you are right there is a classic look here, don’t know how that crept in.
Could be the greyscale underpainting technique, although I’m now getting historical ‘Last supper’ cues.
I think it is in the pose of the human character. Maybe I’ll change that. heh heh
Wow! Fascinating stuff, mate! Very interesting to follow how you go from simple sketches to ever more complex work. Can’t wait to see more of this!
All the best and good luck!!!
Dimitrij.
Paul, Dimitrij: Thanks guys. I thought it was looking a bit scary at the beginning of the colour painting. Hoping to bring it all together in the end! (If I have time heh heh)
Playing around with the colour - maybe I will leave the chairs and rear wall black? Don’t know. I do like the blue though and will definitely have blue light on the rear of the dolphin character.
i think you dont even need to add color here…as an ink work is just awesome. really . the space ship you better get a patent before hollywood copies them.
one thing. no one is gonna be smoking?
