Uplift Universe - Image Entry: Roger Bonner
This is the portrait layout I have decided on rather than the landscape layout. I had lots of ideas but this one is stronger. Indoors and aboard a alien space craft. I did this drawing very fast because I did not want to be too commited to any layouts too early in sketching. I saved the time for the compositing, 3D modeling and details; when I was certain I had a solid composition.
This is the Alien character I am tweaking in 3D. Lots of morphing on the head. I am trying to keep it simple. I have decided to breakup the color of the outfit Uno is wearing to make it more intersting and to control the amount of white in the picture. I used Photoshops plastic bubble texture two times managing to make it look different in each intstance. Once in the chamber behind the girl then as scale armor for Uno.
Close to finish. I am using a Poser model as a standin for the female specimen in the hybernation tank. The blue background texture I created using Photoshop on my Apple Macintosh computer. I am very good at creating textures for specific scenes. This one fell in the space textures category. It is a huge texture with infinite details that I plan to use in future projects. Photoshop and Bryce create the most astounding textures. Bump map details and color define a textures appeal. This texture has a lot of 3D game and anime appeal to it. In this Scifi setup I am using Photoshop to create the lighting on the table. Drop shadows and outer glows seem to do the trick. Weighing the amount of light to fit the touch screen console in the scene is a bit tricky. Uno is the central character in the foreground. I thought about another alien on the left side but the composition is already crowded. I have to stick with the sketch in order to adress all the detailing of each element. This picture will be finished on time.........

Here, I am getting more and more ideas for details now that I am satisfied with where each element in the scene belongs. I thought about using more white in the scene but its very boring and takes away from areas that had special lights and details. The lights on the star maps on the table have to be tweaked. I used the clone brush to paint in the stars from a picture of the stars.
This is the final image. I painted lots of details in this artwork and enjoyed the blending of 2D and 3D. I wanted to keep it dreamy and filled with more symbols and relaxing colors. I think these colors inspire the imagination and evoke the brilliance of the universe. I airbrushed and painted over the standin model to create a more interesting outfit and a more beautiful face. I will do other pictures or takes on the same set to expand on the idea of whats happening from different angles or time frames. In order to finish this picture I have to save quiet frequently and keep all the elements balanced and suggestive. What I am trying to do in creating a still frame or picture is to find the strongest take or snapshot of the subjects on the set. Imagining this setup and creating it finally has opened up lots of opportunities for me to enhance visually any subsequent takes on the subjects and their adventures in future pictures.
This piece was inspired by my favorite movie "The Fifth Element".
Uno has just taken this female specimen from planet Earth and he is taking her to another distant planet. She is in a hybenation chamber. In this scene, he is checking her vitals on his toy device and mapping out star map cordinates on the touch screen console in front of him. She is in stasis and unaware of her surroundings. Her bright yellow outfit is keeping her warm and feeding info to to devices aboard the ship. The chamber induces dreams of all types that keep her healthy.
Looking through the window of his ship on the left you can see the planet they are preparing to leave. Uno studies other species and transports them throughout the universe for Scientific purposes. Aboard this huge spacecraft; there are other specimen all being prepared for transport by Uno and his crew.
