Finally got around to submitting some work. Here are just a few roughs regarding potential alien species and how they would look next to a human.

Sorry, I posted out of order here. I originally had a quick concept concerning the huge caves on Mercury where the home base is for the characters in Sundiver. I imagined a human and alien discussing plans for the next flight out as they watch everybody work below on the cavern floor.

This the image I want to go with. I want to show a human teaching an alien how to hunt with a rifle. I want to show the alien learning about the ways of human life.
Comments are most welcome and I intend to get a greyscale value image up very soon.

Finally added some colour, still rough at this stage. Will begin working on the sky and detailing the mountains. Still want to think more on my alien.

I like your hunting concept.Right now the focus seems to be on the creatures eating,and the human doesn’t seem too excited. Maybe if you bring the human and alien closer to the foreground, and have them interacting or teaching, it could be a little more intimate. Looks great. Glad to have you onboard.

Thanks sasquatch70, I think you have a good point. I have been a little concerned about the size of the main characters. Will take your comments onboard as I progress. Cheers.

Finally got some more work up. Things have changed a little. Sasquatch70 made some helpful comments and now I believe I am headed on the right path. Lots of detail added. The idea is that the human is trying to warn the alien of a creature approaching. The alien however is too busy trying to sort out the rifle and mimic the human to notice.

This is my first challenge and my first complete digital painting. For this challenge, I wanted to touch a subject that would be very human. As humans we are hunter/gatherers. That is what we have done for our entire existence in one form or another. I find it easy to believe that other lifeforms out in the Uplift Universe would also have primal hunting instincts that have evolved over time.
The alien is an Octimbian (the name comes loosely from the creatures having four arms and four stalks with eyes.)The image shows the Octimbian being taught about the human way of hunting with a rifle. The man is a guest on the Octimbian’s planet and has to ride around on the equivalent of horses, which are called Jibs (the name comes from the sound they make when communicating with each other) The Octimbian is also a creature that copies or mimics others in order to learn. I wanted the Octimbian to be in a state of confusion. Not only is it having trouble handling the rifle but as the human points out the oncoming danger, it also has to mimic the humans behaviour in order to understand the message. All would be too late but the human is also reaching for his own rifle to save the day. Clearly under such pressured circumstances the humans and the Octimbians have to work hard on their communication.

very nice for a first digital painting. I did the same thing with one of these challenges , the Eon challenge was my first digital painting. Good Luck with your entry :slight_smile:
