I’m just posting some works in progress (rendered in wireframe without the distracting textures) to show my thought process up to this point. Higher resolution versions are available.

Good work
It’s a nice scene and I like the creature it looks like it would make a great pet, well I would like to have one. What type of background is she going to be in, a beach?

#4

I think that the answer to that very question is my chief stumbling block at this point. I had originally designed the concept with a forested setting in mind, incorporating organic scene elements that were obviously not terrestrial in nature, but after hearing your suggestion of a beach, I realize that any of a number of backgrounds would work for the scene as it is currently designed. This concerns me, since it also means that no matter which background I choose, the foreground will appear seperate from it, so I think I need to do some rethinking on how to meld the two. Thank you for the insight!

I’ll post some background work after I finish my homework for class, but in the meantime here’s a WIP I pulled together yesterday morning.

Now bringing a setting into play…

You can probably guess which particular sci-fi movies are influencing my choice of environment. What can I say, they were filmed up here, so inspiration is handy. There’s still a bunch of work to do on this, but at least it’s looking better!

#6

Still working on many elements, but here are some obvious changes to camera and lighting.

#7

Now updating with the final image, which I was able to render at high resolution. Viva la Vue!

#8

In this picture I wanted to focus on some of the positive relationships between us (humans) and aliens that may be found in the Uplift universe.

#9

This is another work in progress, detailing a change in position, camera angle, and scene.

This is the final submission. In this picture I wanted to focus on some of the positive relationships between us (humans) and aliens that may be found in the Uplift universe.

From what I’ve read, the focus and most information available on alien races seems to be on sentient races rather than those that might be pets or companions, not candidates for Uplift for another thousand years or so. So what if a human fell in love with one of these more primitive races? After all, forming an emotional bond with more primitive creatures is nothing new to humans, and is a concept that trancends all barriers of time and space.

My inspiration for this was many, many years of watching kids with their puppies and kittens, and I drew on memory for most of my own reference while working upon this picture. Picking up my own emotive balls of fur helps, too.

Software being used thus far is Poser 7, Vue 6 Pro Studio, and Photoshop CS3.
