Uplift Universe - Image Entry: Juan Manuel Bautista Hoepfner
My scanner went kaput, so I made this quickie sketch that mildly resembles my original pencil concept sketch. Anyway, I think it coveys the idea of the concept, even when all the (human) proportions etc are wrong
Here is a WIP on the alien character. I’m still thinking how I’ll do the feet and hands before I beging sculpting and detailing.
interesting idea. There is a program which you can use it sketch out your ideas fast and friendly with and they have a freeware version called artrage Here is a link. try it out if you want a more natural media feel to your work.
Keep at it!
Thank you. I’ve doodled in artrage a bit, but I prefer Manga Studio for the work I do. However, my small digitizer tablet is not working correctly (blame 64bit OS?), and my big tablet is packed away. I wanted to start working on the challenge before I made my mind to look for the tablet in all that stuff I have packed away (shivers).
FINALLY!!! I uvmapped the alien. Granted, not a perfect uvmap, but quite workable, IMO. I did some loop changes on the main body too
I’m concentrating on the reds for the overall texture on the alien, with some hints of pink and yellow.
I didn’t detail the chest too much as it will be wearing a shirt and pants, I did not detail the chest too much, just enough so that the shirt will (hopefully) drape around it nicely.
Still haven’t thought what with the back spikes and the shirt…
Rendered in Lightwave, btw.
Hey there Juan Manuel!
It’s great to see you join the challenge, I think your alien desing has nice possibilities (the long neck and wacky face). I like tha spikes on the back, but I guess in this case it’s a matter of stayng just away enough from the dragon look, aside of that you’re going very well!
I’ll be checking this one for sure:thumbsup:
I’m glad you like it, SteevieWoo.
It does indeed have a potential as a dragon too, I’ll be saving the mesh for some modding as a dragon after the challenge is over. But you’re right, I have to balance the design so it still is alienesque and not dragonesque.
I think it will be defined more as an alien once I clothe him.
Upon initial first look I don’t see it as dragonesque, but more of weird shark/loch ness hybrid.
I like it so far. For a 3D image, the texturing is very painterly.
Thank you, I’m glad you like the texturing!
I’m trying to go for an informal look (as the theme of the picture in itself suggests), so I thought a more relaxed style of texture would be nice. Anyway, I don’t have alien references to guide me :).
I guess as long as the alien cannot be pinpointed to a shark/loch ness/dragon figure, it’s fine for an “alien” look.
Today seems like a busy day, I’ll try to work fast on “real” (and boring) work to have some time in updating work on the challenge (fun!)
As Poser is the 3d app I do know how to rig (sort of), I’ll rig it here and export it to (most probably) Lightwave for render purposes. Here is how I’m going so far rigging. Fingers, toes, and the face need much much further rigging, but the arms and stuff are almost there.
A test render in choke choke Poser! Surprisingly, the normal map and displacement map and etc look quite well. The eyes have a “proxy” material, the teeth should too, but it was a test render, just to see what happens.
The pose itself is not too good, fingers etc still unrigged. It is more a “how would it look in Poser?” sort of render.
@ JuanManuel
Not only a very cool idea but some really nice modeling + texturing + rigging to follow too imho.
Isn’t Silo2 behaving only too well these days?
Hi from the Silo forum :buttrock:
P.S. I really like the alien model he’s really funny.
Don’t know if I’ll use Silo maps at this stage, if it really got high poly maybe I’d give Ultimapper a go?
But I agree it looks preety decent on your model.
PPS I think the alien could really use some funny very white teeth for the smile.
Hi Spin99,
Yes, Silo2 is behaving wonderfully, boxmodelling and SDS modelling in Silo is just so much fun.
I think the topology of the alien could be a bit better, but in general, I guess it is ok.
I agree wholeheartedly on the white teeth. I need to fix that ASAP. And rig the hands, feet, and head.
