Final image.

Not sure if I totally like it. I’ve been linger on it for too long, hard for me to judge it now.

Both Donglu and I are submitting the final image tonight. My final print size is 4300x2419

“Can we just go home? There’s nothing here, only sand and rocks and
sand and rocks and
”

“Shush! Just follow up. I can smell them
Come on, come on little human, come out and play!”

“It’s getting late and my favorite show is about to start
Let’s go home
I don’t want to miss my favorite show
”

“WOULD YOU CUT IT?! Stupid fool! Because of you, we have never caught a human! Don’t you get it ?! If we can catch a human, just ONE, we will be rich! And then you can buy the whole DVD collection of your show! So be quiet and follow! Wait, do you hear anything?”

“No
”

“Never mind. That way, let’s go!”

(Off screen voice, Tiffany.)

Today’s probably not my best day. When we were passing the Deadwind Valley, two Kun scouts showed up from nowhere. Those dirty bastards invaded our planet, capture the earthlings and sell us to other Patron races as slaves. I pulled Knuckle back behind a pile of rocks before they spot us. Knuckle wanted to take the scouts out. I gave him a sign to halt.

We can take them alright. The uplifted Neo-chimps are extremely fast in action, giving the Kun huge headache in short-range combat. But one of earthling’s secret underground shelters is only a mile away from here. Open fire would attracts more enemy and put the shelter in danger. I can not take that risk.

Hiding in the shadows we wait, silently.

I think, your final image turned out quite nice but I have honestly to admit that watching your WIP I was expecting even a bit more. It boils down to two things. First thing is, I don’t think that the backgrounds works too well with the 3D elements. It looks very 2D and also very sketchy. Perhaps it would be a better idea to blur it a bit? Second thing is, your characters are obscured by the lighting. There’s nearly no chance to see the lovely modelling you did on the foreground figures. The light on the big alien foes is ok but your main characters are hardly visible and that’s really a shame because you did a really good job on their modelling.

But I don’t want to sound too negative. All in all you’ve created an atmospheric scene with very nice acting on the characters. Best of luck for your entry!

hey Daniel! Thank you so much for your input! And thank you even more for believing that I could do better!

Oh well, I’m a modeler and that’s the only thing I think I’m doing ok is modeling. I don’t have enough skill or knowledge or vision for texturing/lighting/composting yet. It’s my 3rd in year in industry. I’m aiming to pick up rest of the knowledge little by little within another 3 years.

as for this challenge, no matter what result I will get, I’m happy with it. The day me and donglu submited our finals we were sitting there and go “well, we both did our 100%. We did good”.

It’s donglu’s first time join the challenge and I’m happy she pulled it off. It’s my 3rd and I formed certain modeling style during the progress. That’s our biggest achivement from this challenge and we are both very happy.

Yet, always aim a bit higher. I will do better next time. Good luck to your entry too!:scream:

very nice Style, great work!

:wavey: Shifu! Gragratulation! You nicely completed this challenge and I can tell that you tried your best to perfect this image~
 Very well done! I like it!

No doubt you showed your excellence skills in modeling. =w= And i see the improvements on the lightening, etc.
=w= you will always do better~

best wishes from tudi~XD

Hi Jack,
You did it a final image, funny story, and good luck

Hey Jack,

Really cool work. Brilliant illustrating of the text excerpt.
The body language is all telling what can be read imho.
Nice characters lighting composition, top work imho

My only crit I don’t like the “brush painted” look of the final.
I don’t know if you really did paint over, or if it’s just the shaders you used or what.
But ultimately would have preferred a clean CG look.

Don’t like it when 3D stuff is made to look 2D 'cause then it becomes almost
pointless imho? Of course you could extract a good 3 very different paintings from
the final scene, probably?

But ultimately realise that if you wanted to paint it in 2D you could have done it much faster and in the end results could have been similar?
Just a thought hope you don’t mind.

Cheers.

Hehe, finally it’s over~ Now I can start planning my next work.

To Spin99: As for the the brush painted look, there are many examples:

The Outpost, Ognian Bonev (3D)

The Hunter, Alessandro Baldasseroni (3D)

relic, yidong li (3D)

Lady of Shalott, Yang Zhang (3D)

and much more.

I’d like to humbly make some correction on your saying of “prefer a clean CG look”.

  1. CG stands for Computer Graphic. Mattepaitning, digital concept art, digital paintings are all part of CG. Therefore “a clean CG look” needs to be redefined or explained in a better way.

  2. “when 3D stuff is made to look 2D” Let’s start with some basic definition here: 3D = 3 dimensions = x,y,z. 2D = 2 dimensions = x,y. No matter what you do in 3D, as long as you render out an image or a sequence of image, that image will always be 2D. When you submit your final image, the guideline says 3636x2***, that’s the information for x and y. there’s no z. the only way to see an real 3D is to have a 3D projector like something they imagined in starwars. Therefore “when 3D stuff is made to look 2D” also needs to be explained.

  3. "Don’t like it when 3D stuff is made to look 2D 'cause then it becomes almost
pointless imho? " Hehe, in fact I know what you meant by “clean CG look”. If I’m correct, you are referring to the type of renders which contains this typical result of specular.

Pointless? well, let’s shoot something quick: Appleseed is 3D, but look like 2D. Are you saying what they did is pointless? That they should draw it frame by frame? Many environment shots in Sincity are 3D. Many shots in the film, which contains those 3d elements, have the classic frank miller comic look (2D). Was that pointless as well? Does 3D always has to stay as pixar/disney/ff7 advanced children/when-you-look-at-it-you-know-it-is-3D type of look?

As Zbrush was not created for only making high detailed ugly monsters, 3D has a lot of uses. In my humble opinion, the method of using 3D and showing 3D should not be limited.

Anyway, just a few cents to share with. Thanks a lot for bring this topic up. Lovely discussion I believe.

Hi JackZhang thanks for the reply.
Sorry if got you going, let me also explain I AM a newb and an outsider looking in.
So please don’t take my comments seriously.

Please note one thing I was commenting but not trying to detract from your image.
I think it’ll be a case of personal taste as well, whether things get rendered to look like they were painted (2D? lol) or not.

  1. CG stands for Computer Graphic. Mattepaitning, digital concept art, digital paintings are all part of CG. Therefore “a clean CG look” needs to be redefined or explained in a better way.
I was referring to a certain cartoon look that seems somewhat related to the likes of Pixar films. Rendered characters are created in an environment that simulates physical 3D space and this shows in the finished work (3D?)
Yes people usually refer to 3D as work that was created showing some sort of computer generated simulation of 3D space (x, y and z)

Of course this is probably a layman expression that I’m still quick to adopt.
By 2D work I’m like most people referring to work that doesn’t rely on a computer to simulate a physically accurate 3 dimensional space. It might, or not, still try to reproduce it BUT by merely depending on the artist’s senses and understanding of what he’s looking at or imagining.

  1. "Don’t like it when 3D stuff is made to look 2D 'cause then it becomes almost
pointless imho? " Hehe, in fact I know what you meant by “clean CG look”. If I’m correct, you are referring to the type of renders which contains this typical result of specular.
Yes pointless was probably a badly chosen word there. Please realise that I was only expressing a personal opinion. Nothing to do with any rule book.

You know I think that if people can draw and paint (obviously in 2D lol) then I don’t see a point in going through the strenous lengthy process of creating a scene with models textures lights and rigs to end up with something that looks like it could have been done in Photoshop. I think you’re adding a huge time penalty to doing something like that, and the reason for it just evades me. Of course I’m not you and don’t have your professional skill hence possibly do not understand your point of view.

I can imagine it being a big challenge and surely results are even computed to be physically accurate if compared to a painting done in Photoshop. I see many artists doing it, you’ve linked above even, thanks. But I still don’t see the point I’m sorry.

I know I’m nowhere near being capable of producing a photo real image at this stage, not bringing that into the discussion. I just don’t like the “fake 2D look”, and that is all I was tring to say in my post. And again not to detract on your work or entry, which I still think is brilliant anyway :\

Hello Jack,

Just saw your latest WIP. It really looks like a winner.

A few comments though:

  1. We can’t see the full acting effect of the actor models. Particularly the girl and the monkey, they are shadowed too heavily for the audience to see if they are being mischievous or afraid.

  2. I understand the light source (moon) is behind the actors in our POV, but maybe you can let the light bounce around some more (some NASA footage shows some pretty good illumination even from light in space or light reflected from the moon). I really think the “story behind the picture” can be improved if people can see the acting and life you’ve put into the models.

I understand there’s no more time to fix it. hehehe… But if you remember a few posts before, I said I was kind of torn about whether it would be a cartoony-comedy scene or a gritty dark suspense scene.

This seems to have a little of both. And because I’m more “PIXAR” than “DARK CITY” you can notch up those two comments to my sunny Pixar disposition. hehee.

Good luck Jack, this is easily one of my favorite projects!
