Uplift Universe - Image Entry: Eoin Rogan
Hi. Here’s my first post on CGSociety ever. I though an alien caring for a human baby might make a good subject for my Uplift entry.
I’m trying to create a transparent skin over bone and metal look to this alien creature. The plan is then to have it standing in a backlit doughnut shaped corridor (like on a 2001 style space station) carrying an infant. I don’t tend to use traditional sketches for previsualisation. I prefer to render and position/ reposition the scenes component parts (rendered seperately) until I’m happy with the look, then I return to rearrange the 3d scene for rendering.
I’m trying to get a transparent skin look so I’m rendering out a underlying skeletal layer (as well as a vein layer). Here’s the skull. Complete with cybernetic ears and eyes.
Here’s an early mockup with most of the models built and arranged in the scene. I tried out a couple of characters in the back but decided to drop then in favour of robots ferrying babys milk and medicine in the end.
Now thats a face only a new born could love :D. Good work all around. Perhaps some more selective lighting would do nicely here to bring forward our subjects. Congrats and good luck.
Yeah, one butt ugly alien. But with a heart of gold!
Thanks for the suggestion Rares. I’ve taken it on board. I’ve called this finished but I still think a bit more work is in order. All the best.
I think that last final image post was corrupted (didn’t seem to be displaying properly) so I’m uploading again.
This is a work in progress render of the alien nurse character. I hadn’t done too much detailing at this stage.
(sorry, I’m not posting these wips in any particular order)
Well I was hoping tp post on your WIP, but see I’m late.
However, liked your imagination and style.
What did you use for CGI?
The textures came out gret.

Hey thanks! Yeah, sorry about the posting order here it’s all back-to-front. Disaster.
I created the base models and background in Max. Rendered background in Max and alien rendered and detailed in ZBrush. I overlaid many different ZB render passes in Photoshop for lighting, shadows, gloss highlights etc. and just tried to match the aliens lighting to the backgrounds.
