Uplift Universe - Image Entry: Andy Jones
Hi Andy, what a weird evolution the Dolphin creature has undergone! It is upside down even! But in essence, their function seem to remain the same, as a human tool.
Let me suggest some major revamp to your paintings. You could expand it to a wider landscape mode, give the landscape a major overhaul (more dangerous looking, lots of crevices, alien looking walls and mountains, and the like, all held together by a strong depth of field) and topped with extreme weather condition. You could add a herd of the dolphin mounts coming from the left side, one of them being ridden by the human or alien. The foremost alien could be the lead shepherd, watching over his herd.
The pointy thing on the backside of the dolphin looks like a stalagmite. What is its function?
Don’t give up, Andy. Keep trying!
Hey Andy, I like this latest update. I think the composition flows alot better this way. I’ve already read other suggestions so I have nothing to add. Keep at it man it’s really coming together!
Thank you very much nwiz25
jeromoo I think I need to sort that dolphin face out as it’s not meant to appear upside down hahaha. the eye needs raising a bit I think. As for the overhaul I agree that if I carry on with this, I need to make the landscape a bit more interesting so I shall take your suggestions on board.
The function of the pointy thing was as some sort of transmitor and also to add a little something to the upper left hand side as everything seems squashed at the bottom. Really appreciate your ideas!!!
Bill Thanks as always for the support
Appreciated.
Hi Andy
Love they way this is coming along, I have one crit and it is a composition crit. The dolphin alien, they guy and those line things coming off of the top of the dolphing make one big straight line that cuts the image right off at the screen left third of the image. The colors are great .
Linda thanks for the comment! I agree about what you say and have started to change the layout of the whole image. Hopefully this time it will look more balanced.
Hi, Andy, it’s coming along really well. i like the changes you’ve made in the foreground alien, especially his scale. I like seeing him nice and large like that. Very Jim-Burns-esque.
One area that could use soem work is making a stronger foreground/background division. Right now it feels like the giant dolphin on the left is about to step on the teensy people and other dolphin-strider on the right. The transition from foreground cliff to background plain is very soft and makes them look like they are all right next to each other. Maybe that distinction should be sharper, or maybe the litle folk need to be higher up on the canvas to fit in with the perspective you’ve established in the foreground plain.
But the sky and the chartacters, the important stuff, is looking really nice. Good luck with the rest!
Michael I absolutely agree about the depth issue I need to sort that out. And now since you pointed it out it does seem as though they are about to get squashed haha!
Thanks very much…I am on to it
Now that I have widened it I need something on that side and as I merged my layers ages ago I don’t feel like moving the dolphin or human at this point so spaceship it is. Still need to sort out the DOF issue, especially with the foreground and middle ground where the party is.
Thanks for looking
The Scouts headed out to find a new home for the three races. Their nomad way of life was coming to an end and the city beckoned. Who knew what fortunes or misfortunes the humans lives would take once they arrived. The dolphins would be sold and the apes would become servants in the hustle and bustle.
Sorry that was really bad! Anyway I think I shall finish my picture here as I seem to be spending loads of time on it and I don’t think I can go anywhere else with it. I want to do other things now
Thanks for looking and thanks to everyone who left me feedback!
Good stuff Andy! I haven’t had the chance to go back and have a look at this image for a while. Looks great! I like the creature in the foreground and it has that “classic” sci-fi look, with the colour palette and style.

headtrip, sasquatch70, Bill, nwiz25, OZ and TCPortfolio, thank you all very much for your comments! This is my first challenge and I enjoyed it. Also there are some incredible works in this challenge.
P.S if anyone can help. I have sent a tiff of the final image a few times now via ftp but I still don’t seem to appear on the entries page, and when I refresh it says I haven’t uploaded my finished image. If anyone can tell me exactly what I am supposed to do I would appreciate that.
Thank you
