Uplift Universe - Image Entry: Andy Jones
hello anyone who is reading
This is the first time in a CG Challenge for me so I apologise now if I start submitting things wrongly etc. Anyway I decided to pluck up the courage and give it a go for a change and let the experience help improve my work
I will be posting my WIP’s asap
Cheers!
G’day, Andy. I know the feeling well…But let me say that once you hit the submit button you’ll figure everything intuitively…My first time was the “EON” comp a year back and found the whole process very cool!. Best of luck to you.
Marley
Thanks Bill, I shall try my best…when I can figure out what the hell I am gonna do!
Marley yes i remember that challenge and how after reading it and seeing all the entries at the time I thought to myself…TO HELL WITH THAT!! This time I have plucked up a bit more courage
Will have a look around now at what is going on!
well I still haven’t got a clue what i am going to do. I did this rough idea last night, two alien layabouts defacing an old wall whilst a cop car hovers above them ready to arrest them. In the back we can see the futuristic metropolis. I will more than likely change to something totally different but it’s a start.
I think I need to read this book as I am still unsure as to what exactly we can and cant do.
If anyone can clarify I would be most grateful. Can we do absolutely ANYTHING as long as there is a human and Alien in the image or does it have to have some bearing in the novels? I know ‘READ THE INSTRUCTIONS’ I did and I am a bit thick.
Cheers
Hi, Andy.
I saw your portfolio. Good stuff there. I liked very much!
About your doubts, see below:
From the “FAQ page”:
“Q: It’s based on a book… do I have to read the book?
A: Nope. You don’t need to do anything book-related, it’s just there to help set the theme of what we’re talking about. As long as you’re depicting alien-human interaction, you’re set!”
And from the “Instructions page”:
"Your Mission
In this challenge your task is to show the interaction of aliens and humans. You must depict the interaction of humans, and at least one other species.
You can base your aliens on the species described in David Brins classic Uplift series or you can dream up your own.
You can use any setting you like - planet bound, interior, exterior, or in a space ship. However the setting is secondary to the depiction of human - alien interaction."
I hope it helps you.
Good luck to you!
Thanks Geeba! I think what I will do is take a good read of all the example literature provided tomorrow and go from there
I decided to scrap the first idea and instead just browsed google for scenery that inspired something in me.Came up with this quick mountain scene sketch from a photo that caught my eye.
Added a planet in the sky and the makings of some city in the bg, which is being watched by an alien/human partnership of some kind.
Still not sure where I am going but I may explore this one more.
I will do some concept sketches of teh two characters I think.
Thanks for looking
I have decided to go with this idea after all otherwise I will be here all month trying to come up with the ultimate clever idea that in the end has been done many times before
So I will stick with the old ‘looking out over some scenery’ idea.
started to develop the alien/ape thing and I am also working on the mountains and snow. I will have to do some more research from other artists who are more expert at rock and mountains and textures as I can never get it quite right.
Next step I will probably enlarge to 300 dpi and I will do some space ships and TRY to do a planet hahaha!
Thanks for looking
your first time ? welcome ! have fun man
liking your entry, really nice palllet and the dude looks thoughtfull
Oz and Neubius yes it is my first time. Always been tempted to give it a go but I am one of those people who always forget to save stages of their work and are a bit shy to show the scruffy stuff before it’s finished!
Anyway I am enjoying this I just hope I carry on remembering to save key stages haha
Thanks
A closer view of the ape/alien. Not sure what colour this will end up and I will paly around with textures on this.
Good start Andy, I like where you’re going with this idea and the colours work well. Keep it up mate!
Thanks Bill! And Thanks for talking me into having a go at this! It’s kind of fun
ha, yea competitions like this make you want yur concepts to be of the highest quality don’t they?, well they are of very good quality…they development of your ape/alien is genious!, he really did standout
great work, andy!
Marley
I did a rough space ship and cloned it. I will make them more individual later but for now it is just to see what they well look like in the positions.
working on the mountains and the characters a little too as I go along. Working at 300dpi now as well.
God I am useless at explaining what I do
thanks for looking.
Thank you Marley! You are very kind
I am not sure that green is working for an ape trhough? I will mess around with that at some point I think.
