Upgrade to 980?

#1

Hi all,

I know this is a well worn topic, so apologies in advance…

Software I use mostly
Maya 2014
Vray
Zbrush
3dcoat

I currently use a Firepro v7900 and I bought Vray 3.0. I want to be able to use the RT viewport properly, so I think I’m going o have to jump ship to Nvidia. (Stop me if I’m misunderstanding anything.)

So I was considering maybe the Quadro k4200. But I’ve read on this forum its not that good for the price. (as always with workstation cards). So I was thinking about maybe getting a consumer card 780 or 980. But then will drivers be an issue? There aren’t any drivers available for it from Autodesk. (That said there aren’t any drivers for the k4200 from Autodesk either)

So, anyone have any experience with the 980 and Maya 2014?

Thanks

There are many problems running 980 cards with VrayRT, I think is not even officially supported yet. Better to check on Chaosgroup forum.

Get a 970 instead.

You don’t need special drivers for consumer cards. Pretty much every card will work fine with maya and everything else. Houdini is the only software that is picky with gfx cards and that is getting fixed with Houdini 14.

Cheers guys,

The chaos forum is a bit ambiguous as to whether maxwell cards are supported at all.

Another option is a 780ti which I can get for a similar price and seems to have more cores.

How do you think the viewport performance in maya will compare with these cards? It’s good with the V7900 and while I’m keen to use RT, I wouldn’t want to lose any general performance.

Maxwell architecture should be supported in the near future but right now a 780ti will be a better option IMO. Seems that 980/970 are supported in the nightly builds of the software but there are still many users reporting crashes.
BTW if you are fine with AMD cards they should work too. If you check on Chaosgroup forum in the VrayRT section there are tests showing AMD r290x outperform the 780ti, it’s also cheaper and have more RAM and you can probably use your Firepro for viewport and the 290 for RT.
Of course it’s better to ask to Chaosgroup for proper support.
