Unroll surface / flatten a model

#1

I am supposed to build a physical model of a relatively simple 3d form out of paper. There are no curved surfaces, only flat triangles. I have modeled the thing in max, then i imported it via .3ds into rhino where i turned it into nurbs.

Now one thing that crossed my mind was to explode it and then reassemble every surface how i saw fit, but since there are tons of these triangles this now seems impossible.

Another idea was to break the model into several segments and then unroll them without exploding them. But i get overlaps this way, and i can’t really figure out how to fix them once the surface has been flattened.

I guess that exploding the entire model, and then joining small groups of surfaces which obviously wont overlap once unrolled would work, but this seems time-consuming as well.

Is it possible to unroll it, but to keep it from overlapping? It doesn’t seem so complicated to tell rhino to create clusters and group surfaces until they start overlapping.
