In the midst of being created from a moldy block of cheese I give you my 3rd grade school teacher:

And here is the concept drawing:

I’m not very good at organics but this was a blast to do.

decided to model Tim Burton’s “Boy with Nails in his Eyes” character
(References: 1, 2, & 3)

I think we’ll let the deadline go on this one… I’ll open it for another day for anyone else who wants to get theirs in and we’ll vote from sometime tommorrow morning.
I guess this still needs to be done…
results wil be posted here early next week.

You get my vote Steve. How did you produce the top, middle wireframe? I didn’t know Wings3D had a display mode like that.
Same here. Steve gets my vote but I think yours (Leebre) and romtins’ are great as well!
And Leebre, to get that view just use shift-tab for a smoothed view.
Hmm… thanks guys I vote Leebre.
Guess that…uh…puts me in a slightly awkward postion. So next time I’ll make it a longer challenge, of say a month, perhaps that’ll get more people inclinded to compete…
Thanks again for taking part and watch this space!

All good stuff. When does the next challenge start?
I just re-joined the forums, been a few years…and I love Wings3D!! However, I usually find Maya (my other software of choice) to be better when modelling interior surfaces, and I switch between the two - but do the bulk of the work in Wings.
Let’s see some more challenges, and great artwork!
Yep - the next one will be a longer challenge of about 2+ weeks and a definate deadline… Pop back later this week for more updates…
OK what is the next challenge. I am sorry I missed that one I really like character oriented challenges.
So…is there a challenge yet? If not, I may go ahead and think up something. If I do, I’ll start a new thread about it…
I’m thinking that a monthly challenge might be good. If it’s scheduled, say, to start on the 1st of the month, and is due at the last day of the month, then people will know and be able to participate as their schedule allows. I also favor challenges that require more finished work than speed modeling…it should all be speedy, amiright?
Some random challenge ideas (hi-rez modeling):
Let your mind run wild! Any takers?
This forum should be a place where we can all learn new processes and techniques from each other. For example, I have no idea how to ANYTHING in wings besides model. I use Maya for UV, texturing and rendering. I model in Wings because it’s at least 50% faster for me. However, more technical modeling procedures may require MEL scripts and such…
I think these challenges are a great way to improve our skills and knowledge. Let’s have at it!
Well the predatory creature and the futuristic land vehicle are both cool for me. Celebrity bust is a bit much for newbies and we want as many participants as possible. (I have done some with varing degrees of sucess)
Personally I am not into guns much and I feel Wings is not very strong on architectural modeling. (it can be done just it is not optimal)
I do most of my UV mapping in Wings. Occasionally I find things better done in UV mapper classic but Wings does have a good UV mapper. I render in a 5 year old copy of Bryce. Predatory Animal is my fave from the list. It might make it more fun to make it sort of a toon version.
great idea - I’ve had a very busy work/home life the last couple of weeks and haven’t had time to get it going… If you’re willing and able, of course, please feel free!
Alright! Go to it m3ng! I would suggest announcing the competition now, but not starting it till the next month to give enough time for enough people to be aware of the competition.
Also a personal suggestion: Ive found the subjects chosen for competitions are often too broad, like futuristic land vehicles or a monster or something where the winner is often the person who thinks up the most clever concept rather than who did the best modeling. I would suggest doing a simple subject like a chair or a horse or just one specifac common object, at least for some of the competitions.
Well I disagree if we wait longer less people will participate the people who want to get into a new challenge check back here looking for one if you don’t follow up then they will just go away. You need to cash in on the momentum of the last challenge and get a new one going.
I also like things where there is a bit of creativity involved. This is not work it is our spare time we should be doing something we enjoy.
I think the scope of this first challenge will be smaller, because I do want to start monthly challenges on Dec 1st.
I want to allow for creativity as well as a chance to demonstrate solid technique. I’m not sure how you guys usually grade entries, but there should be a combination of Modeling Technique, Concept Realization, and Originality.
In theory, being a modeling challenge and not a concept challenge, no one should be expected to design all of their subjects. In fact, it may even be better for some people to model other people’s designs. If you want to do your own concept design, by all means go ahead!
Look for a thread in this forum soon!
