Since I’ve never done this before, is there a deadline on the initial entry form?
Unofficial Matte Painting Challenge 07
Closing date for entries will be 2nd June 07, 12pm GMT. I’ll post up a thread for final entries 1 week prior to this date. Final winners will be announced on the 14th June.

LOL ironic… I just deleted a maya scene file that I helped a friend light over a year ago for her lighting and rendering class. Why the Irony you say, because she modeled that exact same museum!
RiKToR:
Hehe, that’s when you use them two painful words … if only
Thanks Jaime for making this a sticky ![]()
- Dave.
I’ll probably start after the weekend, we got tight deadlines to meet at work, Can’t wait!
Good luck again everyone! ![]()
It looks like a wide angle probably the 18-55mm that comes with the D50. I dont know how big the actual museum is but I would guess more to the 18mm side of things.
Hey everlite, after re reading the rules, Im curious to what degree can we use 3d? I mean personally I can use my stock textures to recreate the bottom half of the image without the need removing the people, so i guess my question is how much of the orginal plate do you want to see or can I 3d it using the plate as reference and textural resource? I know this is a 2d methodology in matte painting but being a guy with a degree in 3d and lines of matte painting 2d/3d being blurred, im curious if what techniques would be fair to limit. Because I can do clone and remove all day long in photoshop, Ive been doing it for 7 years now but to recreate accurate geometry in 3d is a little more challenging to me since I never was a great modeler.

Spot on
18mm it was.

Yeh, i see where you’re going. I’m cool with that. The task for stage 1 is simply to prep and create a clean plate, by whatever means, so 3d is an option, just try and match the original plate if you can.
Dave out
Great you pulled something out of the hat, David!
Im in, hoping to be able to finish it this time :).
I think David “Everlite” has come up with a really nice idea, not as wasted as many others , I hope to see some amazing matte painting s here, I have to tell you guys that this is not as easy as many of you think,
think about
mood
visual composition
color
attention to detail
focal node
photorealistic 3d rendering , textures and models
I will moderate this challenge and I hope I can be helpful for any of you guys
the panel of judges this time will be joined by some moderators from the CG SOCIETY that will be confirmed later
Good Luck to everyone!
Cheers Jaime,
Yeh not an easy one but a challenge that i’m sure everyone will rise to. Can’t wait to see what people come up with and how they approach the difficult areas, with this in mind i’d like to ask that all entrants post frequently and as often as possible, this way we can all learn from each other, which for me is the focus of this challenge
Good luck everyone, thanks to CGsociety for their support and getting us on the front page:thumbsup:
- Dave.
One thing that i find interesting and very much looking forward to is how to begin with everyone will be producing pretty much the same image as they rework the plate, tackling the same problems; working together in a sense, but over time and especially in the third stage and beyond each entry will take a different turn and blossom into their own unique interpretations. That’s what i think really works about this challenge
Good luck everyone ![]()
ah this sounds awesome!
I’ve never done anything like this before, not sure how far i’ll get
But i’m sure i’ll learn heaps
I’m IN ![]()
This sounds really cool and challenging. But if everyone will post there clean plates woun t that make it easy for others to take parts from their plates and use them?
I think i might give a try to this!
Hey guys, I just wanted to let you know that Ballistic have agreed to sponsor some books as prizes. I’ll have more info later.
Hi all, this sounds very interesting. As i am new and doing the matte painting for the first time, here i am in full josh…

Dave i think you are doing a great job… it helps us to pratice and learn in this wayz.
About my-self , working as a gaming artist. Hope!!! i will find more time to work on this.
Is it allowed to add any kind of alien character in the scene?

suresh-artguy:
Good to have you here mate. Traditionally matte paintings are environments only without any characters or at least until they get a bit further down the pipe line (out of the matte painters hands), so for the 2D matte painting, no i’m afraid no aliens
However if you wish to go advance you could create a camera move and have an animated character in there, though that said final entries will be judged completely on the matte painting itself.
Glad you’re here
AnimZiggy:
Howdy Ismini, Don’t nee to worry about the pics
Really hope you get a little spare time to join in though ![]()
Thanks everyone - Dave.
