Unable to convert polygon shape to subdivision

I’m using Autodesk Maya 2015 with all of the latest patches/updates. I select a polygon and go to modify>convert>polyongs to subdiv

I receive this error:

I tried resetting the tool in case I messed with an option, but it still does the same thing. I am sure that I selected the shape. I even tried deleting the history. Nothing works :banghead: . I would appreciate help suggestions.

subdivisions in maya are dead… are you sure you need them they are old and outdated…
subdivision in maya does not mean subdividing… its a different surface type like nurbs…

to get a subD preview just hit F11 and to smooth something use the “smooth” in the mesh menue…

Thank you for your reply. The answer to your question is yes and no. I don’t need subdivisions directly, but I do think I need to convert to subdivisions between converting polygons to NURBS. Does anyone know of a way to convert polygons directly to NURBS?

I messed around with the settings and increased the maximums on the convert polygons to subdivisions and it seems to have worked. Still pops up that valence vertex warning, but I guess I’ll ignore it and see what happens.

if your model is pure 100% quads, then actually I believe you can convert from polygons to nurbs directly without using maya’s subd’s as the intermediate step

I can’t go any further with this character without converting him to subdivisions, but Maya refuses to let me do that. I’ve tried everything i can possibly think of. I’ve set the max faces and max edges as high as they’ll go. I’ve made sure all the polys are quads and that the model is all cleaned up. Every time I use the cleanup function, it comes up empty. So I dunno what to do.
