UGAC - prop102 - Ultimate Crate/Barrel - lutonomy

This is the first time I’m trying a challenge. Seems like a lot of fun and I definitely need an excuse to work on my modeling skills!

The crate I’m doing would work well in a sci-fi based shooter game, and I’m picturing something along the lines of Ratchet and Clank. It could contain items/power-ups if blown up or work just as well as cover. Here is my concept sketch:

It’s more or less an alien shipping crate. The border edges and diagnal guards are a chrome-esque steel, and the inner material is a black rubbery grooved type surface.

There it is. Good luck to everyone!

Here is the model so far. I’m being very conservative with the polys when getting the general shape so I can have a lot left over to add detail, thickness (rightnow the chrome cage is paper thin…), and the roundness the shape needs. I’m on track to get that outline at around 500 triangles, leaving me able to double the polycount with details.

Planning on using bump mapping for the grooves on the inner box. Any advice/crits are most welcome. Thanks!!!

Looking pretty good. Keep going, and make sure to keep us updated.

Well, I started over because it dawned on me how wretched my mesh was turning out. So this time I actually thought about how to go about building this crate and lo and behold it looks a thousand times better. I gotta remember to think more often!
Here is the new version. I’ll do some touch ups then start unwrapping uvs.
