Hope it’s not too late for me to join. Anyway, if I finish this challenge on time this would be my first challenge. As you can see from the image below I intend to model a simple treasure chest filled with gold coins and covered with undergrowth. I hope make the chest texture more overgrown and old than depicted in the sketch. It should look like its been on the ground forever. So, Ill probably have a lot of moss and or vines on the texture.

If work doesn't eat my time the next few days I should have enough time to finish this. Wish me luck.

The mesh…so far.

ow my, thats good, the tris is a little high, you got 217tris left so make the use of it

good choice too, keep the work up

#4

your wasting far too much polys on the top of the chest i’d say.

#5

Thanks Guys. I wouldn’t normally use that much polys on a chest but I figured I should go ahead utilize as much of that 1000 poly limit. The rest will be used for vegetation around it. I would have loved to make more objects to complement the chest like a Cutlass or gun but with time and texture space contraints (512) I decided to keep it simple. If time permits I will add more stuff to it.

Here is a little update..... still a long way to go.

Finally Done. Exactly 1000 tris. I used 1 diffuse map, 1 specular map, 1 bump map.

nice, =) you guys are so much better at texturing than me…it’s my weak area I think. I’ll fix that tho, so I can do nice work like this!!

turned out very well.

Thank You all for the nice comments.

When you created that texture sheet, how much of it was hand painted and how much of it was photo manipulation. I am interested in your technique.

Also, Good Job, this is the strongest entry in my opinion.

Thanks Douglas,

In this case it is mostly photomanipulation. The grass and roots surrounding the box are hand painted but some overlays were used to add texture to it. As far as technique, I seldom ever use pictures without doing something to it. This usually mean combining two or more pictures, levels adjustment or color adjustment. The wood for instance was taken from pictures i took of the deck of my apartment, a bench and an old water damaged plywood from my parent’s back yard. I overlayed a rock texture with a low opacity just so it is not so smooth. I combined two moss textures and put it on top the wood texture adjusted levels and colors and used an adjustment layer so I can paint some of it off. I pretty much used the same technique to create the rusty metal. The roots were painted with a small brush and a bark texture overlay set to a low opacity on a clipping plane. The branch is done the same way with more of the bark texture showing. The grass shapes were made using the pen tool Colored and then shaded. The rest are taken from pictures. Hope this helps give you an idea of the process. Thanks again.

Thanks oeystein    !

#17

Wow!! This is intense work! I especially like the locket and the coins! They look 2 real 2 be true lol…

#18

Thanks Miak! The coins are made from a picture I copied over into separate photshop layers so I could add shadow and later dirt and grime. It helps if you good starting picture to work from.

Thanks again.
