UGAC - CHARACTER 101 - AMBIENT ARTHROPOD - Erilaz

This sounds like a challenge I may actually fit into my schedule for once! Concepts coming up.

#2

Might try a few concept ideas before I settle:

Going towards some kind of explosive bug. A bit cliche though. May work a few more ideas out.

#3

Hmmm… not sure i’m liking this one. May have to develop the concept further. Spikes maybe. Some sort of caltrip bug perhaps. It’s late.

So far the game genre is FPS, the sort of creepy that surprises you in mass clusters doing small amounts of damage but in large numbers.

Dooo do dooooo…

Hmmm… the carapace/abdomen may be too high and weird.

Oh this is at 1278 tris so far… fairly expensive for what it is! I’ll look into reduction as I add more refinements.

Whee!

#5

wow, thats pretty fast man, nice work so far.

Thanks Cromo! It’s a pretty basic shape, so it wasn’t too difficult to model.

I’ve never done a normal map before now (all the games I’ve worked on have been basic engines), so this will be a great chance to learn to put details in!

#7

And continuing…

#8

Very cosy looking critter… the Armageddon Tick

Looking good so far. I like the fact that you’re going with an imaginative concept that ties in with gameplay. I’m just remembering those little skittering spiders from Unreal II. One didn’t do much, but they swarmed like crazy, and usually startled me.

The cool thing about this model is that, at this point, it could be done in either hyper-realistic or cartoon style. And the legs are cool. Very segmented, very insect-like.

On the bug’s back, Are the quads-within-quads for spikes, or just variation on the topology?

A very nice ā€œBombas-tickā€.

Thanks guys!

JamesMK: I like the name! I may just use that!
Imagus: I’m going for the serious kinda boom, but comic-style would be fun! The bobbles are just for bumpiness.

A little texture work:
