Lets ave a go then
UGAC - CHARACTER 101 - AMBIENT ARTHROPOD - Andrew Hickinbottom
Well, this is certainly going to be interesting. Your human characters always seem to have a lot of personality, so I canât wait to see what you come up with.
Hmmm - im shattin meself, because this is gonna NEED to be designed, which means i cant do my famous âmake it up as i goâ routine. I definately need more non-human characters though.
Dont wanna spend long on it though.
As usual, my feeble scribblings are letting me down, so im gonna âsketchâ in 3d.
Its only a mockup, so lots will change, but i want to make a bug that creeps me out. Im a bit of an arachnophobic, so anything with long, thin legs and a small body is scarier than say, a huge, armoured beetle with sturdy legs.
I like the strange thorax thing at the rear - it makes it look larger, more imposing, and may also have some markings on it to look like eyes to intimidate predators. I may change the shape of it because its reminding me too much of the antlions from HL2.
My other approach was a massive, bulbous, pale, tick-like thing with barely visible legs. Would look disgusting, but not very good as a game enemy. Unless its like an exploding, flood-like creature. Ill experiment.

It ahs a pretty cool look already, youâre right about it having it point up a bit it does feel a bit more imposing, but yeah it does look a bit like the one from the antlions in HL2.
And I see youâre trying to scare youâre FF style girl.

Ho hum - been doing sod all this weekend, but just spent an hour on spidey. Changed the body design to look softer and more organic, than armoured. I hope it doesnt look too âphallicâ but i was partly inspired by those huge-ass tree spiders with the long, thin abdomens. The round things on the sides could be venom sacs, poison sacs, fake eyes - who knows!
Next update would probably be a lot more intresting.
Still all âsketchedâ polys. Everything will be made from scratch once im happy with the design.
Feedback on the design would be good, cos im not too good at that area

Looks great!
Keeps getting better with each update. Keep it up. ![]()
As far as the design
It looks like your trying to keep it more on the realistic side, so its good from what I can see.
Yup. If i make it too âdesignedâ or fantasy-like, it wont have that icky spidery look that makes arachnophobics squirm!
Shelob from LOTR, 8 legged freaks - theyre huge, menacing, evil spiders, yet i found the real life spiders in arachnophobia much more unsettling. Size counts when youre a spider - and its small, not big!
totally creepy! also, totally phallic, i assume that is unintentional?
really like the legs.
Andy-
Your design is good and simple. Initially, from what I see is âquick and aggresiveâ when I look at the overall stance, not much different than a scorpian poised to attack. The tail gives me a different opinion though, the rounded end implies a club-like attack, and with that in mind, I personally would not be too threatened by this, just freaked out by my normal fear of bugs with long legs. The manidibles read well with their size, but I would think I could anticipate the attack coming from that area. IMHO, think about how this thing defends/attacks. Then apply this to the legs or the mandible. Right now, I donât get that though process.
The legs and the eyes are definitely giving this one a nice âcreepyâ feel. The legs are reminiscent of those found on âdaddy longlegsâ spiders.
Keep up the good work! ![]()
Absolultely love this critter, as the other said the eyes and legs really are convicing !
The âvertical designâ is really original, love where you are headed with the details on that part aswell.
As afrolaxman said though the âroundnessâ of the end makes it a lot less threatening, perhaps sharpening it, or making it into a kind of armored shell might look better ?
Amazing work either way!
