Tweak Mode problem

#1

In tweakmode, is it possible to click-select vertecies that are hidden by/behind faces? i.e. I add 2 image planes, work in wireframe mode to see all the vertecies of my model, go into ortographic view, start draggin things around but are not able to drag vertecies that are behind a face. Is there a “seethrough” mode in tweak?

I know it is possible to select vertecies through a face by drag-selection, but so far no luck with it in tweak-mode.

Please tell me I do not have to buy Lightwave to get that feature back into my workflow!

Tweak works on single faces, edges or vertices, so selecting multiple vertices won’t work.

I don’t see the need to work on vertices obscured by the view anyway, it doesn’t make much sense? If you have the default shortcuts, use xyz combined with ortographic mode to get a “traditional” view, ie top left front… you can also press shift while holding any of those, and it will give you the opposite side.

If you want an equal result on two sides, ie a symetrical face or something, try the wonderous virtual mirror function.

Thats okay, I only want to drag one vertex at a time anyway. The issue is that I am not able to drag a vertex that is behind a face (but visible, since I work in wireframe mode)

I.e. a WWII airplane, the wings will slope upwards, and cover up vertecies on the hull I would normally have point-and-drag access to in other apps (drag what you see). If I am working in shaded mode, the vertecies in the back should not be draggable, as they cant even be seen.

Sometimes the highlighting of vertecies, edges or faces in tweakmode also seem unlogical. Even if the vertex or edge is in front of any other vertecies or edges, it still selects neighbours of the actual vertex I hover over, and therfor I have to change the angle of the camera (instead of staying on a flat axis view). This especially goes for vertecies close to the imageplane, and also when in virtual mirror mode.

I would like to hear that Wings3D has an X-Ray mode ala Cinema 4D

Ah, I understand.

One way of doing this can be to work with your airplane mesh as a solid piece as long as you want to, and then for fine level tweaking like you’re talking about, you could split the mesh at the intersection of the wing and the body and then hide the wing.

You would have to stay away from modifying the seam though.

When finished with the tweaking of the body, unhide the wing, and weld/bridge it back together.

Rather than being able to select through objects I would rather be able to hide parts of the mesh, this will hopefully be added to a future version of Wings. At the moment the best solution is to loop cut the model into seperate objects so they can be hidden as sevenfingers said.
The unreliable selection is a known issue and Bjorn is working on it. It’s supposed to be better in 0.98.16, I haven’t tried it yet myself though. - Baz

Incidently, drag selecting will select “hidden” verts I believe, you can then deselect the verts you don’t want. It doesn’t work with Tweak of course and is a bit long winded!

<< select “hidden” verts >> …only

w/frame
vert mode
press and hold shift
drag marquee / select vert(s) and keep lmb down
release shft
release lmb

(assume p knows 'cos of reference in first post  )

Not much better in 0.98.16, in my experience.
