Tutorial: UV mapping for Winds3D and ArtOfIllusion

#1

Hi all,

Art of Illusion (aoi.sf.net) is a fully featured, free 3D animation studio that supports UV mapping.

Since Wings3D (wings3d.com) has a great model unwrapping tool, I thought I’d do a quick tute.

Comments and crits (I’m no Wings3D guru!) most welcome.

(Note, AoI 1.7ea2 is needed – this tute is for the soon to be released 1.7 version. See the open discussion on the forums for an ea2 early release!)

Cheers,

I see Wings 3d and Poseray, but no art of illusion, beside the top pic?

It doesn’t look as though AOI is needed at all.

I could be missing something, but reguardless that “poseray” program looks like a great workflow improvemnt to compliment Pov-Ray.

Oops, I needed to add more info on Art Of Illusion.

You can’t animate in Wings3D, nor use groovy rendering effects like caustics, photon mapping, global illumination, motion blur, focal depth, etc, etc, etc.

Check out Art of Illusion at:

I love the tute. I should add the note, if your scene in Wings3D has multiple objects and you UV map them all and them import into AoI, you might run into problems reopening the file later. I think that I will address this issue on the AoI forum on sf and let Peter know about it.

Like I said, I love the tute.

Wings3D and poseray use OpenGL, but I don’t know that much about it and I think that comes with most systems these days.

Unfortunately that isn’t true. Windows comes wich a bunch of default drivers wich just works for most cards. However, these drivers only support DDraw/D3D (Direct X) - that isn’t really a coincidence, MS pushes their technology by any means… even if it’s inferior.

Well, the solution is a simple one liner: If OpenGL doesn’t work, just install the latest drivers for your graphics card.

Oh and thanks for the tut
