Tutorial: First steps in Max 8 Cloth

#27

thanx a lot… really useful … and cool song !! cheers mate !

Hmmm… having some problems with seaming. Take a look:

This this doesn’t have meshsmooth or turbo smooth applied to it. I applied one of those and the seam is still noticeable. I thought maybe it had something to do with seam strength settings in cloth but nothing I am doing is changing the outlook of this. Any suggestions?

#29

Maybe the dress is too tight, or the pattern is funny.

Here is the max file:

www.wsfilms.net/theseermodelgarmenttest.max

All you have to do is simulate it and see what I mean.

#31

Add an Edit Mesh modifier above Cloth modifier and weld the seam vertices
like in my video I did.
That is a Poser model?
Select the Girl mesh and look the stack of modifiers… Delete all that Cloth modifiers
except the top one. When you apply the Cloth in the dress and select the body
as a collision object a Cloth is applied. If you delete Cloth in the dress you must
delete also in the other objects of the simulation.

#32

Basically, the dress is too small. It has become greatly distorted. I suggest you adjust the pattern.

#33

Thanks for the help guys. I got it. The figure was modeled using a poser model as a reference for modeling. Thats why there is a resembalence.

#34

sorry to sound off as a dolt but…i dowloaded your files and when i try and play it with windows media it wont play, missing the codec (???).

#35

Are you talking about the video files on my website? If so, they should play. Some are wmv. and some are asf files. Both of which should play on windows media player.

#36

thanks for replying!
i extracted the files differently this time and am able to view with regualr windows media player…cheers!

Oh you must have just clicked on the link instead of right clicking and choosing save target as.

Hi there. Bao, that tutorial is pretty cool, but I need more help with clothig. I’ve got a character that is wearing poly by poly models of t-shirt and trousers. I want to creat a coat for him, but every time I simulate it the coat goes right through the t-shirt. Should I assing my character the trousers and the t-shirt as collition objects? Any suggestions?

Hola.

#39

Sounds like you need to adjust the offset collision setting on the body mesh when your in cloth.

#40

Thanx, I´ll try that, but wich would be a right value??

#41

Try 1.0

If that doesn’t work then make higher adjustments until it does.

#42

The right way I think is simulate first the t-shirt and trousers, after change them to collision
objects and simulate the coat.

Muchas gracias por sus sugerencias, voy a tratar modelando de nuevo la camisa y los pantalones porque ya tengo el offset en 6 y sigue pasando lo mismo.

Tanks a lot, I´ll try with making up again the t-shirt and the trousers with cloth. I have tried with the offset but a it is already in 6 and the problem is still happening.

#44

Post or PM me the scene and I’ll explain what’s happening.

#45

The problem here is your scale.
Your character is 853 max units tall. Your collision offset and depth should be reasonable numbers relative to the size of your character. Usually a depth of 2cm and an offset of 0.5cm are ok for a normal-sized character (about 180cm tall).
In your case, the offset depth should be more like 10 and the offset 2.5. Note that the offset and depth values are in MAX UNITS.
Another problem with your scene is that you have cm/unit set to 2.54. That means each max unit corresponds to 2.54cm in real life. This in turn means your character, as far as the cloth simulator goes, is 2.54*853 cm tall. That is a gigantic character.
I suggest you set cm/unit to 0.2

Oh, and another thing… no need to put Turbosmooth below Cloth on the character. He is already quite dense, and it will only make the simulation slower. Put Turbosmooth AFTER Cloth if you need to for rendering.

Tankx a lot for all you help guys. Now the coat looks 100 times better than before. It isn’t finished yet, I have to review some other details. See you then and thanx again.
