how do i turn off the spec while painting my textures
Turning off spec
Right click in empty space > flat shading (I think its called - something to that effect)
actually that’s not it, i could just right click and edit material and turn down the spec even though am painting with a different material, thanks anyway for your help
I am not sure I am understanding. Specular can only be adjusted in two places I am aware of. Light properties under “affect specular” which Mubdbox does not seem to have. Or the material properties. There is no other way to adjust specular other than a map or painting.
Can you explain your workflow and what you are trying to do?
Some materials - or at least one I am aware of - does not let you adjust specular.
But from your image looks like you are using a material that does.
An alternative would be to add a spec layer and flood it with Black. Then you could simply turn it on and off or adjust it without changing the spec property.
Just guessing here. Don’t really have the idea what you want.
But a good feature request I think would be to add that switch to the Light Properties.
what I should have said was specular color, when its the default green that comes with Mudbox then its too shiny to see rough rock materials but when you put it to a dark grey then all is ok, just right click on your model in the viewport and “edit material” and look for the option specular, you will see what I was talking about.
I know what you were talking about.
Sorry, it was not clear that you found the answer, because what you said is obvious, changing the material properties. Thought you were looking for something else.
Put another way. In any 3D app there are two places to affect specular - basically - and that is the material or a light switch.
There is no light switch in Mud. But there ought to be I think. Would be handy.
And so you know, if you don’t already, there are lots of material presets to choose from that have less spec already and might also look better when painting.
Material presets have nothing to do with painting layers. It is just another way to view the surface. The layer is applied to the material yes. But the material presets give you different shading looks as a way to previs while you paint.
The idea there and also with the different view port filers is to change the environment closer to your target outside of Mud. Or simply to give you more desired feedback.
Materials do not export with the paint layers. They are just there for feedback while painting layer attributes, for instance painting spec and other attributes.
Same goes for lighting and so on.
Just for visualization.
It certainly would be good to be able to toggle spec off globally. Yes you can change the material or add a black spec map, but that’s all a bit fiddly if you have multiple materials. A global option, like flat lighting would be very useful.
Maybe something for the uservoice.
