Troubleshooting startup of XSI

Hi all,

Is there a way to troubleshoot the startup of XSI? Up until yesterday Foundation worked great for me. Today I try to start it and I see a command prompt pop for one second and nothing else.

I checked the shortcut which appears to run a batch file. The batch file sets some environment variables and then run XSI.EXE.

Checked the app and sys logs and there are no errors. Is there service that needs to be running?
Surely it’s not a black box when it comes to startup? Is there some type of startup logging?
Any help would be highly appreciated!

Did you run a registry cleaner? If so you’ll probably need to re-install.

No registry cleaner. I am so anal about any changes to my computer this one has me stumped.
It’s XP Pro and the only way to make changes is log in as admin which I don’t even do.

That way I KNOW what changes are made :wink:

Going to try and run setup in repair mode and see if that resolves it…
Just wish there was a startup log or something. XSI apparently just doesn’t load into process.
It has some pre-req’s it would be nice to log. Make it easier to troubleshoot these things.

I hate the ol’ “rerun setup” solution. Just means it might happen again :slight_smile:

Actually have you tried running XSI in admin mode? I have had problems on limited accounts… that’s one of the reasons I picked up a mac to be used for internet needs.

Skipped major step of troubleshooting. Does the same thing happen to any other apps?

Noticed it was happening to another app and used system restore. No more problems. Thanks for the help JDex. Now to work :wink:

Why could cleaning up the registry would cause such problem? And why this happened to a legit copy too? It happened to me before, but mine was a legit copy. Is there anyway to clean up the registry without and still have XSI running?

Actually, I do most of my work out of my home. So my 3d workstation used to be “public access” in my home. My kids and wife used it to surf the net and I would spend most of my time trying to fix performance issues caused by spyware / adware / and viruses.

Since I made them seperate accounts ( love xp ) without admin access. Problem solved. My productivity increased.

Most “registry cleaners” see some XSI entries as nasty and they get removed… I don’t know why, I just know that it happens.

Reg cleaners in my experience cause more trouble than they’re worth… it’s not hard to keep a clean registry… only install software from sources you know and trust… use firefox.

I have this problem from time to time with XSI, a couple of times it was a registery cleaner that caused the problem, so i got rid of all of them, and from time to time XSI still has some trouble, and i found one fix on the net that for me has solved the issue since, here it is, please be aware that if you try this and anything else happens, then i am not responsible for it, but i have tried this fix 3 times, and each time it has worked, and XSI has been able to load properly again.

Open a command prompt:
Start/Run/cmd.exe

in the dos window type:

netsh firewall reset
netsh winsock reset

reboot the pc.

The one thing that annoyes me with this is that i have the windows firewall turned off, but it must be working in the background, with me even knowing it. Naughty XP!!
