Trouble with Animation Layers

#1

Hey everybody,

I have a fully rigged character that I have referenced into several scenes.

Now I have two questions:

  1. I recently opened the referenced file again and did a walk cycle animation on it, on the BaseAnimation layer. Now I want to transfer that animation onto a WalkCycle layer but simply copy/pasting between layers results in the error “Warning: No objects selected to paste keys”. How do I copy/paste keys between animation layers then?

  2. If I were to have no animation on the BaseAnimation layer and a walk cycle on a separate WalkCycle layer and then re-reference the file should it cause any problems with any animation I have done on the referenced file in a separate scene?

Thanks in advance!

Sorry to bump this, but I’m really stuck

  1. Try this:
In the new layer, select the object you want to transfer the keys to and add a KF to the target channels. In the GE, select the source keys and copy, then select the target keys and paste. I think the paste will be relative to the current time. You can try to copy/paste multiple channels in one pass, sometimes Maya keeps track, other times, the keys end up in the wrong channels and you have to do it one channel at a time.
A useful way to adjust timing/values: select keys and use “+=” and “-=” with a number in the frame/value (stats) boxes.

  2. Not sure, just try it…

  1. Eureka! Simply setting a keyframe on the WalkCycle layer before copying the keyframes from the BaseAnimation layer to the WalkCycle layer did the trick!

  2. So since the first problem was resolved, I was able to test this one out. I re-referenced the file with the walk cycle on its own layer. The original animation is intact and the WalkCycle layer is there but upon turning it on, nothing happens. There doesn’t seem to be any animation on it. Any ideas?

Thank you for your help so far, this has been bugging me for the longest time!

I haven’t done much file referencing, so I can’t help there. I have run into some problems w/animation layers, so I’d caution you on those, especially if you need to export anything from your scene.
