tracking issues\inexperience

#1

So I have a scene where the camera doesn’t move at all, just a subject massaging some oil into an elbow at a table with a plate on it. I’m adding some text to the table that I’m trying to match to the slight movement of the camera (hand held). Using a motion tracker works fine, and the text will stick to the null that holds the tracking info.

My problem is that when I make the text 3D (so I can lay it on the table with a shadow below) it tries to keep up with the tracking but it won’t stay in place like it does when its 2D.

I’m assuming because the tracker is only for X-Y coordinates and there is no Z to keep it where it should be.

My next dilemma is that the scene is SO still that doing a 3D Camera Tracker on it won’t read any points at all. It picks up a few points on the subject that is massaging the oil, but other than that, it won’t pick up any points that I can use…maybe 2-3 points total or it says “Cannot solve for this frame”.

So is there a way to get the 3D text to follow the motion tracker points at all? Like I said, it keeps fine as 2D text.

Thanks for any help…

Ultimately, I feel like what would be helpful is if there was a way to get 3D tracking data for the camera on footage that is really still :\

For now, I’ve just made it work with 2D layers, making my own shadows, but it would look better if it could be in 3D…

Your best bet here is probably to stabilise the shot instead of trying to match it. Then you can add elements by hand and you won’t have to worry about camera movement etc. Of course, this will only work well with shots where your camera is not bouncing all over the place.
