tortress WIP

#1

I’ve been working on a piece for a while now & thought that I’d share it with you as this will be my first full Messiah project. I bought Messiah purely for the renderer which I’ve regretted many times but I’ve been slowely working away at it & I think that something finally clicked today…it was a magical moment, I felt like I actually knew what I was doing &, despite a lot of work left to do, I finally feel like I know roughly how materials work in Messiah.

Anyway, if you have an account at Spinquad you can view the whole thread here: http://www.spinquad.com/forums/showthread.php?p=128027#post128027

If not, here’s a quick rundown of what I’m doing… I came up with the idea of a giant tortoise carrying a castle or fortress into battle (hence tortress!). I made a start by taking reference pics of my own tortoise & modelling in Lightwave. From Lightwave I went into ZBrush & added the finer details & then…I thought that maybe I should actually do some concept sketches, which is when it changed into more of a seige tower on legs.

Here’s the concept & my first proper dabble with Messiah’s shading system.

Nice start. Think some DOF would bring the Tortoise out from the background. Also your concept has much more emotion that needs capturing in you render… Keep it going

thanks for the comments.

This is purely lighting & rendering at the moment, I’ve yet to finish the rest of the scene which is why it’s floating in mid-air. The tower is modelled & I’ve got a rough scene made up in Vue (which is in the background) but I found a nice national park only a few miles from here that looks almost identical so I’ll probably take some photos & use them.

I have a question about possible ways to achieve something. The tower is to be placed on some material which I want to look like it’s moving, however I don’t really know how to go about it as the shell is displaced at render time. I had thought about just modelling a flat mesh, adding fine details in ZBrush & using bones to wrap it around the shell? I’d like to have some control over the final shape.
