I absolutely agree with all Bryan’s words. As an artists we should swictch on our imagination and create our own vision of this script. Even steampunk can be interpreted in different ways, especially when we speak about future.
As for me, I don’t see this like, when all people living in houses wich made of riveted metal with cooper pipes. Yes they can be dressed specificly, they can use steam powered crafts but noone wants to live in iron cages if there is no reason for that. When I’m thinking about Milan’s script (which was inspired by Japanes animation and sciense fiction novels), I imagine some kind of deep dramatic story. I don’s see some kind of Monty Python’s Flying Circus with all that surrealisms. But, it’s just my vision and who knows really what can happen in far future on another planet? :slight_smile:

So again, let’s respect each other’s approach. I’m sure this case is looks much better then if we all had the similar look matte paintings in the end. And one more thing … you guys both in the top of my fav list of this challenge and I wish you become a winners! :beer:

Hi Guys,

It has come to my attention that some people are a little displeased with our top 11 decisions, and who got in despite the rules in place. As Bryan stated, please try to stay calm and not attack anyone else based on the finalists we’ve seen. It is a competition yes, but we need to keep our sport up. If there is an issue, please direct it to a moderator of the forum such as myself, Jaime or Milan. James, no need to point out the rules to us again, we know what they are. In the end, we judged the shortlist based on a number of factors. The regular instructions (minimum of 1920 HD res submission for print and display, with support of the Kreola story in general, and a display of high quality in reference to photo realism, creativity, and uniqueness that brings out an artist’s own style.)

Yes there were some rules that were bent, or some ignored, but we blamed that on ourselves as it was a rocky beginning as many of you have seen. There was confusion to where things were to be posted, what resolutions, aspect ratios, story, and setting. We apologize for that as it should have been really all ironed out at the get go. Due to some circumstances, we tried to remedy that in the support thread, and contacting individual WIP artist threads to point them more in the right direction. Some artists heeded our feedback, some didn’t, but in the end, it’s really the art work that stands up to being in the shortlist, despite some points being off. If it looked good, it looked good, with a general sense of the Kreola spirit in mind.

James, I know you followed the instructions well, but sometimes the rules can be bent in order to create something more unique and powerful in mood. The limitations are there to see what you come up with, and many people did an excellent job in interpreting it in their own vision even though some things we asked to do. We can’t control everyone’s decisions, but if it looks good in the end, then it will work even if it doesn’t include all of the specifications from the beginning (as long as it’s not blatantly wrong).

We have 3 other judges on the competition, and they won’t have the luxury of going through all of the other WIP threads here, and so we compiled the short list for them, a brief set of what the instructions were, the support story, and the base plate to compare the art work to. We really looked at everyone’s final submissions and chose which would be in the top running that best matches a film quality style frame in the end. In a few days time, we hope to find the top 3 in the competition. Not being in the top 3 doesn’t count as a failure in our eyes. Some other judges have already told me how high quality and close in competition these shots that are presented to them. Nice work guys!

As Akim and Bryan stated, you are all winners here. Everyone has learned so much through out the process, forged new friendships, and gathered what can work and what doesn’t in a matte painting as well as create a whole new environment based on what was in Milan’s head. I think that’s pretty amazing to see here in the last few months, and no one should be ashamed of not making it in the top 11, or in the top 3 in the end.

We will be going through, and giving back individual feedback for those who are in the top 11, and those who didn’t that submitted a final before the deadline to show what they did well, and what they can improve upon. This will give you further understanding into how and why we chose what we did.

Richard, I saw your post on FB too, and I hope this message gets to you and gives you more insight into the events leading up to this. You did an excellent job here, so don’t ever think otherwise. You really improved, and so we really want you to keep doing that and participate further by being an active member to gain more knowledge into the matte painting process. Keep it up!!

I can really understand both sides of this discussion. It seems to be some kind of eternal conflict inside each artist - between the art and the client’s requirements :slight_smile:

I’m glad to be among such a nice selection of images - well done everyone. I joined the competition very late and also missed on few pointers which were introduced later on within the forum.

What matters the most for me is the opportunity to have some fun, share my work with CG Society members and visiting guests as well as pushing myself - at least to deliver final work on time. We know how hard is to create personal pieces within considerable short time frames without leaving them for later or never. Like Bryan mentioned - this should have been a chance to relax and enjoy creation of something special and individual within some boundaries.

During this contest I’ve expressed my opinion about the rules already, so I see no reason to double it here. But I would like to give my two cents to this thread.

It wasn’t my first competition organized by CGSociety - I took a part in few of them. So far I didn’t win any prize (except honorary mention in autoPack Visualization Challenge), but I don’t regret any second spent on them.
All of them gave me new skills, more knowledge about myself, my own limits and… how to cross that limits and go forward. After all these challenges I become better - as an artist and… as a person. And for me that is the most precious prize which I could get. And finally… I have a VERY good memories about those crazy times and the people with whom I had honor to dance on the edge of our abilities. Soon you all be a part of this good memories and I really count on you in the next matte painting challenge… but now - let’s all keep our fingers crossed for the future winners!
(However I strongly believe in what was written here - all contestants are winners for the reasons which I mentioned above).

They have not only taken time out of their horrendously busy schedules to judge, but they have also provided priceless and professional mentorship, just for the love it! They’ve asked for nothing in return. This is how you create a name is such a small industry – enormous talent, combined with grace and generosity.

when I was a young lad I learnt a lesson of an old soldier that had become a teacher, I asked him how do you pass an exam?

In the army it was RTFQ he replied, read the effing question.

If you are prepared to give an answer read the effing question base your answer on that and nothing else.

That piece of advice has stuck with me for the last 31 years, every question or brief given I RTFQ,

I agree with you on the most part Mike (I’m assuming that I spoke with you earlier here in Adelaide)…

It perhaps would have been more helpful however if there was some consensus between them, as I specifically asked Milan if I could include an airship and steam in my matte painting, and was told NO.

So perhaps you could explain to me why there seems to be one set of rules for some people, and another set for everyone else?

Just a simple question…

Dear Mike, Milan and David,

Thankyou very much for your time during this challenge.

As there seems to be no consensus about the basic rules and brief which the competition is based on, I will do the only graceful and honorable thing that I can think of and that is to resign my entry.

I didn’t enter to win anything in the first place, it was just an opportunity for me to improve my skills, and I’m happy with that.

Regardless of what anyone says, it is simply not fair to all those people who read the brief like myself, followed the rules of the competition as laid out on the site (such as crediting textures etc), and spent hundreds of hours trying to fulfill all those restrictions, when others are allowed to ignore them.

How can this be a competition any longer with no basic adherence to the guidelines?

My children have been watching this competition, so I need to show them fairness and level ground on a playing field is very important. I hope that you respect my decision.

So thanks to everyone, and good luck to the remaining entries.

You know what, i'm sorry to say this but, I really hate the way you conclude things. Just accept the fact that YOU DON'T KNOW EVERYTHING. And please i am not friends with the judges.(well except to mr. David, but we just met here & exchanged words professionally during the contest) Our friendship doesn't have to do anything with the challenge. You don't know anything mr. colmer so stop talking nonsense and just focus on your main concern to the judges okay? The judges had received your concerns already right? So stop ranting in public.You're not only destroying your reputation by the way you talk, but also affecting other people's reputation by the way you conclude things. Please keep that in mind.

It seems you’re taking this challenge very seriously yourself… I’m no longer in the competition, so if you’re happy that you’ve followed the brief, then you’ve got nothing to be worried about.

BTW… Thanks for the industry advice too buddy, I really appreciate it, especially from someone half my age.
