Tomb of the Snake King

#1

Hey guys,

Pretty new around here. I hammered this out yesterday - it is 599 faces, 1 128x bitmap and 2 64x, one with an alpha channel.

I am going for a comic style, like something from Mark of Kri or something. Never worked with vertex lighting before. This is a great challenge. Comments and ideas welcome!

and a quick turning anim, as this would be seen in motion:

Its a good start…
… assuming its 3d… it lacks depth.

 well not amazing, our textures arent tiling well, specially the cave one, that snake is just bugging the hell out of me. and it seems its not a screenshot, it looks more like you have assembeled the difrerent elements in photoshop.

Looks great to me considering the restrictions for the challenge.

The textures on the inside of the mouth, the wall, and the entrance ramp could use a little more work. They appear flat and boring. Spice it up a bit. Try a different texture for the flames as well…the tip of flames come to a point.

Rotating avi…nice touch.

Hey guys,

Thanks for the crits, they help alot. I worked on a few things: the flame, the rock texture, reworked the snake with a new texture, changed the texture scale on the brick type rocks.

Originally, I wanted the scene to appear big, so i made the texture scale small, but in the end I think it looks better this way, being a cartoon model, and all.

Maybe I am trying to get too much stuff in given the 600 limit, but I am enjoying the challenge!

As far as depth, I tweaked the FOV, not sure what else to do here. I will do a beauty pass with shadows, and advanced lighting, but want to focus on the challenge, and vertex lighting.

Looking good. Don’t worry about the FOV. Those two obviously ignored the rotation movie. This looks like a scene you would find on the N64 system.

Adding more shape to the mouth texture may help a bit. Nothing serious since this is cartoony, but maybe a hint of mouth structure. Shapes that follow the lining of the mouth look more appealing than horizontal lines. Use this as reference. Just adding a jaw line would do the trick.

-I’m really liking this, you’re doing well with the style and color choices, you’ve made good use of the vertex lighting. I agree with the N64 remark, right on.

Crits…

-One thing that bothered me was just that the lower lip of the snake mouth is above the top platform. I assume that the mouth is the entrance to the tomb, so I think it might be better if the edge of the lower lip rest on or just above the platform on top. The way it is right now, it looks too high to reach based on the relative scale of things.

-Another easy thing to fix which is minor, is that the shading you’ve added on the steps adds a lot, however I believe you’ve applied it upside down. I believe the gradient from dark to light should start at the top and point down, so the light edge of the step is at the bottom of each tile, you know what I mean? I it would look more like stairs that way.

-Oh and could you show a wireframe please.

Good work!

Hey Again,

Great critiques. This is really helping!

ElysiumGX, wicked snake pic. I have a few extra polys so maybe I will work the inside of the mouth. Maybe venom glands, the teeth appear to come form nowhere right now.

aspiretek, great call on the step texture! The idea here is that you double jump up into the mouth, and down into the tomb through the snakes throat - and visually i like the mouth off the ground a bit.

i brought the camera down to eye level. worked on textures more, added some edge fidelity to the snake - added a ground plane - and tweaked on lighting more.

   Thanks!

I am adding a wire and a lighted version - which I use to help visualize the vertex lighting.

hey!!

looks pretty cool.
the only thing i can see that looks not so cool is that the fire pillars stick out the side of the stairs a little bit. it just makes it look a little messy but hey! if that’s how you want it than that’s up to you. just thought i would point it out.
cheers!!
