To buy modo or not?

Much much more than that , I come from a lw background that dates back to version 2.0(how many years is that?), just got the prog like 2 weeks ago and I feel at home, so far is worth every cent, I will be doing all my characters in modo.

Antonio D.

This was my second Model in modo, the girl exists but I had no refs to model her still a WIP, but it was a breeze doing her in MoDo

but look around. modo isn’t the be all end all of modelers. If you’re willing to stretch a bit and learn wings 3d, you may not have to spend. It’s one of the most powerful modelers out there.

of course if your doing alot of path extrusion work, nevermind, go for modo.

I highly recommend it for doing mechanical cad type work. Though if you have a lightwave background Modo is probably the most comfortable.

path extrusion work? … well IMO MODO is much much more than just cool path extrusion shapes realtime constrained to the shape of another object, it is much much more, and
you will not have to make the stretch skills thing instead u will be more like in the let loose and free yourself.

Well, my honest opinion: Buy it. Don’t think about it, just do it. Once you use it for a week or so and learn its conventions, you’ll never look back. I’ve been using LW since it’s first beta; I still use it everyday, but all of my modeling is now done in Modo.

LW & Modo play well together…go figure.

Silo is a great & powerful app, but I’ve never really liked the workflow methodologies.

Wings3D is also good, and cheap. But like Silo, it just didn’t work for me from a logic standpoing.

In Modo, I feel right at home. It allows me to work the way “I” work, and for me that’s all that matters.

Unfortunately, Modo doesn’t yet have a trial version, or I’d say download them and try all three to see which one works for you. These aren’t the only apps on the market obviously, but they all 3 quite versatile modelers.

All that being said; Just get Modo, you’ll love it.

I have been using LW Modeler since 5.6. Modo feels like a next generation version of LW Modeler. If you can use Modeler, you will be at home with Modo. Check out the Lux forums for the thread started by Brad Peebler called “Why do you Modo?” There are a variety of opinions there, some from LW users.

I do not have a LW background, moreover the modeler that came with Electric Image. When modeler was being stopped, i had to look for an equivalent. Although i work with Form Z for many years, and modeler dropped out, I tried several options: Silo (that came with Electric Image) Concept Unlimited, Maya, Rhino and even strata 3D CS.

But indeed Modo is really what i was looking for: smoothly, well-organised, high end modeling tool pipe AND with a medium-low learning period.

For me a good replacement for the suspended Electric Image modeler.

My 2 cents

If you like the way LW works, you’ll love Modo.

Initially I had some slight problems getting used to Modo, mainly due to the fact that some of the functions worked in a similar fashion to LW, but not identically. But once I got over that the rest was a breeze.

Some of the most important features are the not so glamorous ones. Like Bevel, it’s a cross between LW’s bevel and Smooth Shift, all of their advantages in one, but not having their weaknesses. I still miss Vertibevel a little, but the important parts are incorporated directly into Modo, especially if you use the macros for repeating standard bevels.

Then there is the Construction Plane. It was a great day when Al Street produced his construction plane 3rd party plug-in for LW, but it always felt like you had to pause your workflow, set up the plane, work, then re-set the plane, Modo does it on the fly without breaking stride.

Edges. Those LW’ers that still hold onto the illusion that having edges incorporated just means that you can select two vertices at once, obviously have never used any application that had them incorporated. It’s a whole new way of working.

It took Modo while to get Bend and Bridge, but it was well worth the short wait. Both work way better than their LW counterparts.

I purchased XSI and Modo just a few months apart, and to be honest I haven’t opened LW since the first week.

Great responses - I am a LW user since the original toaster version so I’m very used to LW modeler  I wish Lux had a demo version so I could just give it a whirl myself. And I think the price is a bit high - but in comparison to some other apps it’s not that bad I suppose. Ahh decisions decisions …

I know, I’m soo alone . . . touch me.

#12

all I am saying . . . . I gives peace a chance

Lovisx…what age are you may I ask?

Modo, certainly improved my workflow speed. The amount of action centers available and macro record features make some of the nightmare tasks form other modeling applications a breeze.

Cheers.

I have several apps - LW, XSI, modo, Silo, Wings3d, Amapi Pro, C4d R9, Maya, Houdini apprentice …

modo is a very able app and has a lot of nice touches, it continues to grow on me. modo’s main weakness for me is a lack of some form of construction history. So, in that respect, it’s very much like LW.

For example, if I extrude a poly along a curve spline, I can’t adjust the spline and have the extruded object update, nor can I adjust the poly shape and have it update. I have to undo and readjust the spline and then extrude again. I know there’s some arguments against a construction history - but having a small subset is all that’s needed. Also trying to line up the poly to the end of the spline is a bit maddening for a modern app.

Again, if you’re coming from LW, then it’ll feel lightyears ahead of it’s predecessor and will be the easiest of transitions … but, if you use something like XSI, then it may not floor you as the be-all end-all of SubD modeleres.

okay, so I’m a troll, I’m immature, I need to get a brain, I don’t listen, and there are certain taboos that I should understand before ever posting anything.

one thing I am sure of though, is that with wings loosing its major support bjorn, I probably will have to eventually save up for modo, as it kind of has a monopoly on high end modelers. But for now I will put on my wings and fly away. Mind you with modo’s current price I couldn’t afford it even if I wanted it.

I remember hearing upgrades for modo were free, is this ture. If upgrades were always free, then for sure I’d buy modo

#16

yeah, I came from a maya background and found modo to be very counter intuitive… coming from a maya background

#17

Service upgrades are free…but a major upgrade that includes new features will cost us.

I didnt mean to imply anything regarding yourself…just that no one has bad mouthed Wings and slammed others choices, so I dont think its that welcomed here.

Cheers.

#18

i come from all background, CAD/DCC. Using modo and jumping to Maya 6.5 was counter intuitive for me. IMO if you use any one software for a long period of time, you’ll find that jumping to another software “counter intuitive”, in that sense its a very subjective matter.

wings is ok, but i prefer Mirai

as for waether to buy Modo or not, i’d say wait for the next major release, 1.02 added a host of improvements(and its only a .01 update), however that aside, there still alot of customization that you cant do to the GUI, mouse button. But if you dont really care about the things i mention…go ahead and buy it, in the end its your money.

#19

lovisx, I dont make a point of personally attacking people but both of the last 2 threads I read of yours seemed counter productive considering this is a modo forum

Have you checked out silo, for $109 its pretty damned good, though I like wings as well, silo is a tad cheaper than modo for the moment.

Cheers

Really? You should try giving “proper grammar” a chance!

I’ve never used Mirai, I’d love to try it. I hear it’s starting to be developed again. Are there any demos by chance out there?

sorry, sometimes I think one thing and type another, it’s almost like a dislexia (I can’t spell either)
