Time for an upgrade?

Hi,

Feel free to move me to another section, I couldn’t find something specific to simulations.

For about 8 years I’ve been working as an After Effects compositor and I’m pretty happy with the software. I mean I know Nuke and other compositors have their uses, but I haven’t really hit a wall yet in my work. I’ve recently downloaded some presets from Red Giant and I’m starting to question whether I need to do particle simulation in some other software.

Basically the presets are a combination of Trapcode Form and Trapcode particular, and they are multiple iterations of the effect to create some pretty beautiful 3D animated strokes with dots and lines in various settings. ANd then there’s ones that are like powders disintegrating.
A few examples:

Now I know that the Magic Bullet suite is mostly the kid version of a professional coloring suite, but are the simulation plugins also as inefficient? I know there’s things like Fume FX and I know there are other compositors, and 3D modeling software that can do particle and fluid simulation, so I’m wondering if I should switch and what a few suggestions might be.

I don’t have a meager system, my specs are:

  • 32GB DDR3
  • Intel Core i7 3930K 2.30Ghz
  • NVIDIA Quadro 4000
  • Gigabyte X79-UP4
  • 2 Samsung 250GB SSDs running in RAID 0

if you are happy with AE + plugins and you can do your job there is nothing wrong in staying there.

but it doenst hurt you to open you mind to learn something new

Alright, so my question is what would be useful? Do I need to decide whether I want to make visual effects oriented particle simulations like fire and smoke versus motion graphic particles like the examples, or is there a software/plugin that is great for both?
