Hey there, my name is theYiffer a.k.a. Chris Hilbig. This is the CGS version of my online sketchbook. The original is over at ConceptArt.org. The reason I’m juggling two different sketchbooks is to get different opinions from different people. Since not everyone here at CGS is on CA and vice versa. The purpose for both sketch books are to improve my chops, mainly my speed and accuracy. My big comfort zone is more cartoonish stuff. (i.e.~ much like Disney, WB, etc.) I’d like to learn to draw more realistictly and with fewer issues, hassles, etc. I’ll mainly post pencil sketches, but since this is CG Society, I’ll also throw in stuff created with Painter, PhotoShop, Blender, etc… Some of the sketches I’ll post are based on stuff I find from work, magazines and the like. I’ll try to give credit where credits due, if it’s listed.

A sketch from the Leonard Garcia v. Jameel Massouh fight at World Extreme Cagefighting 42. I had to rewind and pause that specific spot a couple of times. Made me wish I had a DVR. (Garcia won by split decision. A great fight!)

Another fight sketch via the VCR. This is from the rebroadcast of UFC 100, Yoshihiro Akiyama vs. Alan Belcher. I couldn’t rewind back to that right spot for each one for whatever reason…

I don’t if it’s from the lack of sleep or the amount of time it takes to scarf down food, but it sometimes seems almost impossible to complete any sketches while on break and lunch…

Anywho, here’s something from my sketch book from work. It start out as a sketch from another hotrod mag, but I just went forward from the partial and made it more complete on my own…

Then I decided to quickly throw in some color in painter. If I complete it, I may just finish it in Photoshop, due to my frustration with many of Painter’s brushes. (Or how to best use them.)

Since I’m still wired from all of that Red Bull I had while watching UFC 102. It’s time for new stuff from work! (I know don’t get too excited… :P)

All of these were quickly done in a matter of minutes…

I originally started on this WIP before viewing Manely’s Color Theory seminar. My original goal was to color the sketch using photoshop techniques common among colorists in the comic book biz. I made some alright progress, but I wasn’t particularly satisfied. Labor Day rolled around, the color theory class became half-off, and the WIP hit the back-burner. Just for shits, giggles, and comparison I’ll start out by posting my progress in PhotoShop.

The following two are after the color seminar. Actually they’re the same, one with the sketch, the other without. I brought the WIP into Painter and eliminated the background and main detail layers. I kept the background relatively mute or neutral, nothing too overpowering. It has more going on than the PS version. But it similarly starts out like at the top and gradates darker towards the bottom. My main focus on the character this time around was the flesh. I now feel that I made the flesh much too pale. I tried to apply what I learned from the seminar, mixing in different colors and minding my warm and cool colors. I incorporated local colors into as many area. (ex: the color of the dress was applied to shadow area of the model’s hair.) I also work to keep the WIP balanced with my color variation, incorporating different color in different areas…

Nice sb start. Great to see you’re using pencils too and not just PS.

Regarding your painting, why not try to bring it to a certain level in grayscale first? You can always add color later on, but if the painting doesn’t work in grayscale, it’s not gonna work in color either.
I would say, do at least a couple of dozens of grayscale studies before starting with color studies.

More specifically to this painting -and let’s ignore the colors for now- the forms need a lot more work. Squint your eyes and look at the arm, dress, chair, hair,… they are all quite flat toned. Take a look at the reference and squint your eyes again, try to ignore the colors but look for tones (=values). Forms are primarely determined by their values. Do a lot of squinting… it’s all about observation…

Keep doing those pencil sketches on a daily basis both from real life subjects as from photographs. They are your ticket to the next level.

I notice that I have issues drawing a photo at a smaller scale, so I had to use to print out from the Sherdog site.

NR43: You make some very good points in critique. I’m still learning how to paint (both digitally and traditionally), so grayscale wouldn’t be a bad thing. My only trouble with this method is making that transition from gray to color. I know how its done, but I lack the skill to do it well. The sketch is base on an actual photo, but the rest is from my imagination. I’ll see if I can still find that magazine and work on some grayscales…

It’s been a while, but tis the season for 12 hour days and 40 hour weeks…

The unrecognizable sketch from #5 is from a photo of Sandra Bullock from the 11/15/09 issue of Parade Magazine. I had very little time to scratch her form out…


The woman from the top right is from Target’s Red Magazine.


The bottom was a quickie of Sandra Bullock from Parade Magazine.

Some of these I tried to quickly ink with a Sakura Pigma Brush. I lacked any white out, even though I’ve never seen white-out or acrylic ever play nice with marker ink.

hey nice stuff so far. I think your best assets right now are drawing, inking and composing comic-like scenes. You seem to like characters/people so i would recommend you continue life drawing and using references as you grow. Coloring/painting is a whole different animal but if your drawing skills and work flow are solid you will find it easier to learn. I would try a few coloring tutorials, and practice monochrome shading of values…this simplifies the process a bit. Good luck and keep working at it!
