THE REVIEW CIRCLE 008: May, 05,08 - May, 11

Welcome to the Review Circle.
The concept is simple…

As soon as a new thread for a give week the members of the circle should post: [ol]
[li]FUTURE GOALS:[/li]Tell us what you expect to accomplish for next week, and the near future.
[li]SHOW AND TELL:[/li]Show us what you are working on, what you want to do or what you have done
every week.
[/ol]We have ONLY FOUR rules:
[ul]
[li]Any active member of the CGSOCIETY can post at any time during the week, but Monday night is preferred time (This is the other members can have more time to comment).[/li][li]Comments can be posted at any time.[/li][li]If you post you work, you HAVE to comment on the work of AT LEAST ONE member. (But please KEEP THE COMMENTS CIVIL).[/li][/ul]WHAT IS THE REVIEW CIRCLE?

It is simple. It is away for people to tell us what are you working on…
The only requirement to participate is that you would have to present to the Group something new every week…And everyone on the group has to comment on it.

The idea is inspired on the famous Algonquin_Round_Table from the 1920’a that famous poet Dorothy Parker was part of.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Algonquin_Round_Table

From Wikipedia:

The Algonquin Round Table was a celebrated group of New York City writers, critics, actors and wits. Gathering initially as part of a practical joke, members of “The Vicious Circle,” as they dubbed themselves, gathered for lunch each day at the Algonquin Hotel from 1919 until roughly 1929. At these luncheons they engaged in wisecracks, wordplay and witticisms that, through the newspaper columns of Round Table members, were disseminated across the country.

WHO CAN POST?
Any active member of the CGSociety can participate.

WHY SHOULD I POST?
Think of it as a way to motivate yourself to finish projects, or to show
a like minded group of artists you ongoing work.
Not only that, since we will be posting a NEW thread every week, an artist should be able
with ease the progress their individual progress.

It would be perfect for those working on
[ul]
[li]Porfolios[/li][li]Independent animation projects[/li][li]Long term Painting projects[/li][li]Comic Strips[/li][li]Comic Books[/li][li]Indie Movies[/li][/ul]Or if you just finished an project covered by an NDA, tell us about it, when it expires.

A quick bust today:
Goals for this week: Apply for some more jobs, finish my Dominace War gal high poly, finish that hand i started, start a model for the HMC

#3

Start back on my anatomy studies and finish the first comic for protoculture.us, its a video game website I write for. Apparently I’m the resident artist.

Its so hard to shift gears unless it involves gaming but as soon as I try to do something constructive the world falls on me and I’ve got no time for anything extracurricular. Also just started playing Cooking Mama (borrowed from my cousin) quite an interesting play mechanic. I’ve got to get busy before the 17th. Thats when the Conan MMO starts and I’ll be hard pressed to get my face out of the screen once that begins.

I have applied for another job, and worked a little on that hand, but its driving me nuts a bit, so i did a speed sculpt for 3d totals forum, in the style of my earlier head. its an orc, i did it in abut an hour from a given base mesh

#5

Started on my Captain Hook, took a good chunk out of his face and think I finally resolved how I’m going to do his hair, I’m not quite happy with his skin shader yet, but I think with a few more tweaks it should hopefully look presentable

On top of that we’ll see if I can finish mu uplift entry by the end of the week, yikes…lol

NoirQ - Nice start, is that a helmet you’re starting on the top of his head?

WyattHarris - lol, good luck with Conan MMO, you’ll probably be seeeing my roommates on there. haha.

I like the Captain hook- he looks like the one from the recent (ish) live action movie! Good job.

Just wondering- I’m reeeeeeeally thinking about getting that Ballistic book, but the shipping kind of pushes me over the old budget (20 dollars extra), given that I’m a student…does anyone know what happened to the free shipping? I  it- it kept things within my budget!

NoirQ–You got some wild heads there. Good luck on your job hunt.

nmcelmury–Hooks looking pretty good. Is it possible to fade the hair edge a bit more where it meets skin?

paperclip–Sorry I can’t help you there.

I managed to eek out a few more hand sketches this week for the OFDW. This set makes 20 sketches total. I doubt if I’ll do the last 5 for targeted 25 for the workshop. My plates been over loaded recently. No real spare time for personal projects. That’s the thing with freelancing, I don’t clock out at 5. Work tends to spread throughout the day. This week I’ve been working on more algebra book spot illustrations (yes, word problems with ‘pixtures’ in an intermediate algebra textbook) and doing revisions work on 2 Earth science textbooks, also going to finish on another Cabela’s hunting game box cover illustration for a client.

those are some awesome hands there Bill, awesome work.
captain Hook is looking good as well, not so sure about the curve of the upper lip, but it’s a good likeness already. keep it up man.

here’s some hands i’ve done for the workshop over the past few weeks, i finished that hand today (well, finished it as far as i’m going to take it) and re-rendered that hand i posted a few weeks back, also, a few sketches.

here’s a new Zbrush one

i posted this earlier on, but here’s a re-render and a few shots.

and here are my sketches:

Actually, mercury, I think the shader is pretty good, but you need more variation in the skin tone- greyish stubble tone, more cerise around the nose and apples of the cheeks, that sort of thing. It’s slightly too much the same colour everywhere, deadens the effect a bit. You could also try mixing some greens or blues in subtly, it makes the other colors pop more.

Just an idea.

Thanks for the Crits guys, I agree 100%.

Quadart - Yeah definitely will fade the hair line a bit right now, it looks like its growing straight off the edge of a poly right now (which it is :hmm:). Great looking hands BTW, that looks like it’s been a fantastic workshop!

NoirQ - Agreed about the upper lip comment, his lip gets pretty snarled like that in the movie but I definitely agree it could use some more work. Hands are looknig great! The only thing that looks a bit off to me is his middle finger in your first post, it looks like it may be bending a bit strange on the top two knuckles. Keep up the good work, progress is looking nice

paperclip - Thanks for the crit! I see what you mean about the skin, it’s definitely looking a bit flat. I think greens and blues like you mentioned could bring him to life a bit more. I’ll post some more progress in the new thread when I get a chance. Very nice illustrations in your portfolio BTW. Thanks again!
