THE REVIEW CIRCLE 004: April 07, 08 - April 13, 08

#1

Welcome to the Review Circle.
The concept is simple…

As soon as a new thread for a give week the members of the circle should post: [ol]
[li]FUTURE GOALS:[/li]Tell us what you expect to accomplish for next week, and the near future.
[li]SHOW AND TELL:[/li]Show us what you are working on, what you want to do or what you have done
every week.
[/ol]We have ONLY FOUR rules:
[ul]
[li]Any active member of the CGSOCIETY can post at any time during the week, but Monday night is preferred time (This is the other members can have more time to comment).[/li][li]Comments can be posted at any time.[/li][li]If you post you work, you HAVE to comment on the work of AT LEAST ONE member. (But please KEEP THE COMMENTS CIVIL).[/li][/ul]WHAT IS THE REVIEW CIRCLE?

It is simple. It is away for people to tell us what are you working on…
The only requirement to participate is that you would have to present to the Group something new every week…And everyone on the group has to comment on it.

The idea is inspired on the famous Algonquin_Round_Table from the 1920’a that famous poet Dorothy Parker was part of.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Algonquin_Round_Table

From Wikipedia:

The Algonquin Round Table was a celebrated group of New York City writers, critics, actors and wits. Gathering initially as part of a practical joke, members of “The Vicious Circle,” as they dubbed themselves, gathered for lunch each day at the Algonquin Hotel from 1919 until roughly 1929. At these luncheons they engaged in wisecracks, wordplay and witticisms that, through the newspaper columns of Round Table members, were disseminated across the country.

WHO CAN POST?
Any active member of the CGSociety can participate.

WHY SHOULD I POST?
Think of it as a way to motivate yourself to finish projects, or to show
a like minded group of artists you ongoing work.
Not only that, since we will be posting a NEW thread every week, an artist should be able
with ease the progress their individual progress.

It would be perfect for those working on
[ul]
[li]Porfolios[/li][li]Independent animation projects[/li][li]Long term Painting projects[/li][li]Comic Strips[/li][li]Comic Books[/li][li]Indie Movies[/li][/ul]Or if you just finished an project covered by an NDA, tell us about it, when it expires.

WILL THIS CONCEPT BE ALIVE ONE YEAR FROM NOW?
I promise to keep this going as long there is enough interest.

As you know I have successfully launched multiple projects in the forum
Among them:
[ul]
[li]Daily Sketch Forum[/li][li]FXWars[/li][li]HCR Modeling[/li][/ul]And I helped in the formation of the
[ul]
[li]Bobby Chu Subway Sketch Cub.[/li][/ul]So I hope to see you all…
-R

#4 Robreto

Update, the HMC was a bit of a bust. I was studying those ZBrush DVDs which went into great detail on everything but the face. With the model in the state it was there was no way I could’ve gotten any decent detail without retopologizing. But I got sick and blah blah blah, you know.

With the latest HMC over I’m going to go back to my anatomy studies so I guess I’ll need to get the scanner working if I’m going to show anything.

#3

Bring it on dude. Hopefully I’ll be more productive this week…

#4

I’m going to actually join in this week apart from just nosy-ing around:)

I am in the final stages of a PhD in global illumination, and I’m currently re-writing a load of the base code for more predictable results. It’s all broken down to bits and pieces at the moment for me to patch back together, so don’t have anything overly impressive to show.

Simple, depressingly unimpressive, screenshot of a result of the surface sampling I was working on last night (green dots in highlighted face):

(The samples are used for visibility tests between surfaces, so need to be relatively evenly spread over the faces)

Goal for the week: Make the actual radiosity engine work again after breaking it completely over the last month

(Wanted to show something less along the techy lines, but haven’t had time for it for a while, maybe that can be a side-goal for this week!)

#5

the cgwiki so needs a page on the BONANZA!

#6

Wyett, Beckie - great to see more productiveness

Carina - Seriously impressed about what you do and hope to understand a bit more about it. More please!

And here’s my start for the week:

Mucus, this place needs more mucus!

Testing a Fluid simulation plugin, just draft texturing so far - perhaps I will develop it further. Maybe some strands of hair?

#7

Gunilla, you always have a way of grossing me out lol, seriously cool though, nothing like a little mucus to start off the Monday morning :scream:

Thanks for the comments last week from everyone too, I’ll be making my dudes arms longer as suggested. And nice work everyone from what I saw as well.

As for this week I’m gonna keep working on the CGChallenge when I’m off work. And this week at work, we have been told to make “hot beach babes” for a volleyball game we’re doing…(sighs), guess I better start looking up reference images

#8

Carina, great to see you participate. Of course, I’ve not a clue as to how you’re proceeding with things, but I’ll take your word for it that things are going well.

Gunie, omg, that’s disgusting! Ummm…I’ll take 4!

edit - nmcelmury, ha, sounds like a tough job, but someone’s got to do it…

#9

Ok guys I post my update later today.

BTW I wanted to invite all to JOIN the ONUTS 2.0 thread

CgTalk Daily Sketch 1397 NTL "THE ONUTS2.0 The Props

#10

Carina…sound of clouds passing rapidly over my head…good luck with that stuff!

Gunilla: Is that the stomach? Either way, mucus is our friend.

I’m impatient today for TWO reasons: one, I found out our exam results aren’t out until next monday and two: my picture hasn’t shown up in the gallery yet. I wonder if it’s gotten lost in the maelstrom.

Mcmercury: Do beach babes from another planet: their hot might be our minging. :stuck_out_tongue:

#11

hey guys, still doing some environment stuff. salmon, cheers for that about the guitar, it was just one of the first ones i found in a google image search, i was blissfully unaware that there was a western version

here’s where that’s at, built a low poly, and quickly chucked out a normal map, which will need some work doing to it:

also, a fire extinguisher:

#12

I like the texturing on that fire extinguisher!

#13

so,

having my (participation-)face rubbed in the dirt, I decided to pop in…

Carina… err… yes. Wow? I need more details, before I can give you some feedback. More scientific, over-the-top techtalk details.

Gunilla. No mucus for me right now. Thanks.

NoirQ, I like the textures, too. Makes it look used.

So,

New job is fun, but also quite unnerving sometimes (I managed to make my boss agree to really family-friendly part time conditions, but the occasional extra times like today do exist…)

Anyway,
Plans for this week:

  • I will write a little satire on how I don’t buy the whole idea of an all gay-tolerant and gay-respectful society as long as there’s for example no “Gay Pro Football Players Association” and point out the existence of a commercial which in my opinion still discriminated against gays. I will then read it out in a local pub on 21st using the introductory “any heterosexuals around tonight?” as a quickstart into the grotesque… I hope noone has the nerve to answer to that too quickly.

  • I will find a place to shoot some real vast and beautiful landscape via google earth. I already marked a place just to find out it would take me about a two hours’ car ride to get there. Great. Maybe I will have to look for a closer place…

  • I will make an appointment this week with a friend of mine who teaches overtone singing and start learning it (I used charagyraa already in a recent gig of mine, but that is more like an undertone singing. Google it.)

  • I will send an email tonight to the sound engineer who captured my last gig, so I’ll get the recording sent to me for free.

  • I will probably not draw anything this week. Heck, I am missing that. Maybe this review thingy will get me back on the track.

  • Also, I will copy this list and add into an Evernote to-do list.

Do you know Evernote? I am in love with this app. It stores everything and features text recognition in images! You can do snapshots with your cellphone and paste it into a note and it becomes full-text- searchable! Do check it out.

Also, I think I love this thread idea very much… Let’s see who came up with it… Ah… of course…

P.S.: About Evernote: for example this list… I just marked it and pasted it into evernote as a new note by pressing ctrl-alt-v… I could have used the clipping button in my browser bar, too, to either paste the whole page or parts of it. Or I could have used the universal clipper to make a screenshot and paste it… or… you get the idea…

#14

Mu! We mussed you. I think we were in muourning even. Good muorning.
You sound busy.

Two hour trips for photography doesn’t sound like THAT much- make a family day out of it!

Hmm…how do you change thumbnails in the gallery? Can you do that?

#15

nmcelmury - hot beach babes? Poor you, when you could have been spending it with mucus instaed - ah, well we can’t all be lucky

Beckie - disgusting, ehrm… working on it

Paperclip - at this point it’s more “unidentified bodytype experimental setting” but when you mention it, it could almost be intestinal villii. Good suggestion.

NoirQ - I agree with paperclip, the fire thingy looks good.

Mu - glad to see you here and with a small, not to ambitious to-do list for the week.

I will carry on with the mucus (or for the faint hearted among you perhaps I should say liquid?) scene, while witing for the followup on an interesting request I got yesterday…

#16

Faint heart, schmaint heart! When we say ‘mucus’, we say it with gusto!

What’s the interesting request? Now you have me all interested…

Is gunilla your real name? I’m guessing it’s a female name? I’m sorry, but I don’t know any swedish names. Thanks for the gallery comment, by the way. I think either the thumbnail or the name is giving it a poor viewing count…and it’s not my picture at all. :scream:

Becca, are there any OFDWs coming up? I think I’d like to participate…

#17

People seem to want a hands and feet workshop, what are your thoughts? Previously I had posted this thread but then closed it since I thought we had enough suggestions:

http://forums.cgsociety.org/showthread.php?f=199&t=606243

Not sure about time committments, I’ve got a lot going on, but have been thinking about running another workshop…said that, I don’t want to make any promises but it’s food for thought.

Incidentally, just had my first all adult evening class tonight, it’s a good group and they’re all so cute. I have one student who is an older man with the beginnings of Alzheimer’s, and I think he took my heart. I was really nervous about today’s class since I didn’t know what to expect, but now I’m actually looking forward to it.

#18

Paperclip - yeah, Gunilla is my real name (who would pick such a strange nick?)
It’s a typical female swedish name, almost impossible to pronounce for non-swedes. It’s pronounced with a shard G - as in “guts” with the u as in “you”
Don’t worry about rating or visits in the gallery - I’ve given up hope of understanding how it works. Also given up on posting there, strange enough not everyone seems to be fond of mucus around here, just zombies and stuff

Update:

And a small testclip here

#19

So, is it Goon- eye-la or Goon-illa (as in Godzilla)?

I like your mucus and, hey! ciliated villi! Or is that microvilli? …I think the mucus is a bit too transparent? It’s usually a bit more…mucusy, lol.
I see what you mean about the gallery :argh: , I wouldn’t mind changin the thumbnail to the default window type one, though. Any mods around here care to help out a clippy in need?

Kim chi:
The hands and feet workshop sounds like a good idea, but personally, I’d be a bit more into a workshop exploring a wider issue (like light, form or composition). Let me know if you have any plans to start something!
How are the adults coming along? Are they more enthusiastic? How is it different teaching them as opposed to the young’uns? (Had a look at your blog, by the way, your students are coming along marvellously, makes me wish I was in your class, maybe someday if I ever end up moving to LA…hm…)

#20

So, is it Goon- eye-la or Goon-illa (as in Godzilla)?

It’s more like if you said “gun” in a manchester accent, i.e. a shorter “goon”, the “illa” bit is like Godzilla

Edit: On my lunch break so actually have time for a more detailed post now!

Gunilla: That mucus is EWWWW. In a good way (so to speak) The hairs are a … nice touch, heh. With regards to Swedish names, be glad you’re not a boy called Jerker;)

Mu: Long time no see and all that, sounds like you’re doing well:)
