the old banding issue

#1

so ive been extracting every possible map you can from mudbox to test them all out.

obviously 32 bit is best ie no banding and contour lines but the black areas (i know there not really black!) are affecting the displacement (max and vray) ive tried bringing them in as hdri and bitmap but its not working properly…

so what do i need to do to get the "black areas’ in my EXR files to not affect the displacement in vray? do i need to do something in mudbox? max? or alter them in photoshop?

thanks!

so just another notes I’ve also been playing with the OpenEXR configuration which comes up when you click the EXR file.
This seems to do the trick with color correcting the black bgrnd (to turn grey) but now i am loosing my blacks that i want to run deep into the model?

is there a standard setting for EXR files so you get all the info you need as in the 8bit but without the banding?

thanks

i dont understand your issue.
how does the render look like in vray.?
what is not working.?

#4

its for the vray displacement

the render looks fine with a regular 8 bit but it has banding (contour looking artifacts)

using 32bit it doesn’t (after configuration on loading the map) seem to give me the depth of the blacks even though the whites are working properly

#5

have you turned on allow negatives values for dispmaps.? it should work without modifying the textures…
