The Official Luxology Modo Guide - Sunglasses Tutorial...

#1

Hey all,

Just bought Modo and am working through this book. I have been very satisfied with this book (as I have with all of Dan's Inside LightWave books since version 7), but this tutorial is whoopin' my butt. When I get to Fig. 4.16 on page 95, I just cannot seem to get my model to look right. Something is different and I was wondering if any of you were having/had trouble with this as well? If you did, I would be very curious to see what your workaround was. Thank you very much in advance for any help or information that you may be able to provide. I'm also curious why the book images and model stages were not on the DVD (most books have these now).

I had the same problem, the problem I believe is because when you are moving vertices around in sub-d mode, it sometimes causes polys to overlap each other in non sub-d mode. Remember in sub-d mode you are not working with truly subdivided geometry, just a representation of sub-d geometry. So if you tab back to polygon mode you’ll probably see some overlapping polys. If you move the vertices around so that the polys do not overlap you’ll probably get better results. I had a hell of a time apprroximating the shape that is in the book though. It is supposed to be simple, but I found it really hard.

True, but there is more to it than that. My mesh isn’t even close along the perimeter - where you are supposed to do that bevel to flatten it out. So something is missing - and then, like you mentioned, there is that issue of getting the mesh lined up. I moved on to the next tutorial. We’ll see what happens.

Hi Mike -
as mentioned in my emails, I’ll check all of this out for you.

Thanks,
