I’ll be in this too!

I loved math in school (a long time ago)! Trig, Calculus, pure math etc was my kind of thing. I’ve moulded into kind of a right-brained artsie over the past 20 years so if I don’t contribute anything for a bit it’ll be because I have gone back to my text books to freshen up.

If you hear a bang, it’ll be my head exploding.:surprised

Nerds! Nerds! Nerds! Sorry… I thought back to Revenge of the Nerds: http://youtube.com/watch?v=u1fo5Duhy1E

Seriously though, it’s a cool idea. Gratz to the CGTalk team for making this happen.

Jim Blinn once said that every problem in computer graphics could be solved using an inverse matrix.

When you’re a game programmer, knowing about fast algorithms comes very handy. With the source code of Quake3 the now famous inverse fast square root appeared in several places. You can read more about this topic:

The most important aspect of this should be adding to the wiki. Carina has already added some phenomenally useful information up there, for example: Ray Sphere Intersection

There is also a section started on the application of maths in 3ds Max:
http://wiki.cgsociety.org/index.php/Geometric_Calculations_%283dsmax%29

Since threads get cluttered with useful information, we should be making a commitment to transferring the data over to the wiki, purely for coherence.

I’m with Martin/Carina - this sort of thing REALLY should go into the Wiki. We don’t need another 100 page long thread that contains a universe of knowledge.

Perhaps there could be a Stickied GD thread with a list of topics the hive mind thinks would be useful to add? With discussion following (the discussions per page aren’t useful as no one is hanging out there). You could even point to goliath threads that should be transferred accross to the wiki.

Heres an old one that i’ve found useful. http://www.flipcode.com/archives/3D_Geometry_Primer_Chapter_1-Introduction.shtml

You know in highschool i was one of those kids who hated maths i always questioned where hell would anyone use all these complex equations and theories…

My teachers where never good at explaining if your good at these things you can create games and all sorts of beautiful things.

So i really put enough effort into hardcore maths :frowning:

I use math on a everyday basis. And Im really try furthering my understanding of more advance topics and looking for info on where to start like what fundamentals do I need to know. Shit like that.

I hope you learned your lesson, then:

Never question the usefulness of learning new skills!

Guys, I think that will keep you busy for a while:
