"The Making Of"

#1

Lots of people have asked about the Christmas teaser/test that I put online last month (www.flickerscope.com) so I’ve put up some information (including images and video) on the messiah web site.

Go here: www.projectmessiah.com and click on the “Spirit of Santa” image on the right.

Cheers,
Fred

Hey very cool! What was the process for making the snow footstep image sequence?

#3

Well, you know me: keep it simple. It’s just an image that gets revealed with a Weight Spot that’s parented to the character. Pixel displacement gives it the depth.

I always find it inspiring to follow along someone’s production pipeline. Thanks for sharing your process and congratulations on the end product!

#5

Fred,

Thanks for putting that together for us! A look “Behind the scenes” always sparks ideas.

Best,
Rick

Great,
these are the things that I like to see; it underlines messiah’s great potentials and makes us, messiah users, feel less “alone”!
Finally some nice feedback from the PMG site, hope to see these kind of things more and more often!

Thanx Fred,
maybe at the end I made the right choice afterall!)

great stuff Fred! It should be a CGTALK front page item.

#8

Very cool … it’s so nice to see “Behind the Scenes” look using messiah and Vegas.

Was checking the site earlier today for updates. But this wasnt there.

Its a pleasant suprise. Thanks for sharing.

Go Fred!

Thanks for the “making of” Fred

Always good to see what can be doen in Messiah. I really like it as a new user ad happy with it.

#12

Fred,

I really like the look and feel. Great work!
How long did that take from concept to final edited piece in man hours?

I don’t know exactly. Even saying “4 weeks” is an approximation of sorts because we weren’t working on it every day (except at some points). And Taron did a lot of work at home, so all I know are the daily counts, not hourly. I suppose I could check the Starbucks receipts.

We know enough though that we were able to create a production schedule for doing the whole show and we’re very confident in it.

Thank you Fred, that was very interesting and informative.

I agree Vegas is great. Would it be possbile for a person to do all the compositing and color correction in Vegas, or is it not up to that by itself?

What modeling program did you use for the house?

On page 5, I think you left out an illustration:
“After Taron got most of the Mikey animation done he got to work on Susie. Here’s his first pass at her, though the scene hadn’t been lit for her yet.”

There was no picture of that.

Thanks again!

There’s a lot that Vegas can do, and the recent upgrade to version 7 can do more, but it’s not really complete replacement for a ompositing program. That said, it’s possible that I could have done what I needed in it, except for a couple of shots. But I didn’t have the time to experiment with that idea.

The house was modeled in LW. Could have been anything, of course, since it was so simple.

And there’s no image missing. That line refers to the video that’s right below it. I’ll put a colon at the end of the sentence to make that more clear.

Oh, it’s quite ok, I didn’t mean for you to do an instructional video or something. Your
considered opinion is quite good enough. I was just trying to think about ways to
streamline things for myself. Blast.

They’ve got a 30 trial and a really good forum. Give it a shot and see if it’ll do what you want. There are people (from what I’ve seen on the forum) who use it for some comping, so maybe it’ll do what you need. But for me it wouldn’t streamline things too much, since I would still only use comped footage while editing. Just imagine trying to edit a whole movie where literally every shot on the timeline has all of its elements there. It would be a nightmare. So whether I comp in AE and render it out, or use Vegas and render it out, it’s about the same in regards to how streamlined it is. And there are currently a lot more plug-ins for AE than there are for Vegas, if you need something crazy.
