The Lost World matte painting

#1

Hello my fellow matte painters :applause:

I haven’t contributed in a while, so here are some of my new matte paintings that you may like. It’s possible you’ve seen them already, but for those who haven’t here’s a Lost World matte painting with a temple:

Here’s a version without the temple:

And the initial sketch is to be seen below:

Thanks, Pavel C.

beautiful work, great colors and nice and simple composition, I like the version without the temple the most, in such atmosphere maybe some low clouds could make it look better, great work and welcome back !

Thanks James, appreciate your opinions. Good tip with the clouds, I think they’d fit in pretty nicely.
Actually the version without the temple was done as a last resort. Found out I’d have to get rid of the structure a day before deadline.

Anyway, how are you doing? Can I get to see some of your new works somewhere?

Thanks

Excellent work Pavel. It has that lovely quality of an old oil painting.

I think the temple is a bit lumpy and unstructured. I guess that was the intension, but I would like to see some more straight lines in there.

Nice piece. Good composition, as mentioned the version without the temple is stronger.

A few minor crits…

Over all looks very painterly, not always a bad thing, but sometimes can edge a little too far towards a painting and away from been photo realistic.

There’s a few odd looking hue changes in the sky and around the left tree.

Black levels could be a little deeper in areas and need balancing out, again more in the forground and to the bottom right.

The bottom right cliff face looks a little flat, would look nice with a few trees poking out to break up where it meets the waterfall.

Be nice to see a higher resolution version

Dave.

Thanks for the interesting critique Dave. Some good points there.

Here’s a higher rez version. CLICK HERE

I did a quick After Effects video when I did this matte, so if you’re interested, check it out HERE

Nothing too fancy, just a simple pullback shot. You’ll notice the waterfall is not moving, nor is any of the vegetation. Hopefully I’ll get back to it some day and work on it some more.

Hey if you have max, there’s a free waterfall a few posts down

Great advice, Dave! I’ve taken a look at it and added the moving waterfalls in the scene.
Also some more mist and fog.

WATCH THE VIDEO HERE

It could use some more work as the waterfalls move too quickly and the mist looks a little flat, but I’m surprised how easily one can integrate nice waterfalls and make the scene come alive.

Some moving vegetation would help too. Any thoughts there?

The waterfalls look great in the scene.

You’re right about the mist looking a bit flat, but it’s nothing a few additional fog layers won’t fix.

As for the moving vegetation, using an animated grid warp in the comp works well for that. It’s also great for other small animations/deformations in a painting, such as making clouds or distant smoke move.

Thanks, I used the Mesh Warp function too. It just needs some more tweaking.
I was thinking about using it on the plants too, but I’m not sure how realistically it would appear.
I guess I’m gonna have to try it out or use some 3D plants. I once tried to use vue, but I wasn’t getting very satisfying results with animation? Anyone has experience with it?

Shooting some moving leaves against the sky could work too, but it would be rather demanding for a scene like this.
Could be fun though.

I’ll see what I can do, but you’ll sure hear from me soon.
Any other ideas are welcome, so please share.

So I’ve slowed down the waterfalls, retouched the mist a little bit and tried to animate some of the plants.

I rendered out some wind deformed plants in 3D software and put them in. I also added a turbulent displace to the tree on the left. The plant movement is not perfect, but I guess its ok since the plants are on the sides and are pretty much just framing the image.

HERE’S THE VIDEO

Thanks for looking and commenting.
