The Lighthouse

#1

Hi Everyone,
Here’s a matte-painting that I did, titled “The Lighthouse”! I’ve used Adobe Photoshop CS3 Extended software to create it!

Though this is a finished work, but I’d like to hear comments & critiques from all of you, to make this look better!
Thanks,
Kaustav

The lighthouse should be in more haze at such distance, the edges are too sharp. The water doesn’t match the color of what it reflects. I would make everything below the line of horison less exposed and darker. The smoke is photoshopish, the sun is photoshopish, the lighthouse beam is also not convincing yet. The other details look really realistic, as a photo was used for them.

Hey Kaustav, This is the best of your work I’ve seen so far. Keep it up.

Two things mainly: 1. Create some ariel perspective. There should be less contrast with objects as they recede towards the horizon.

  1. Try to add another colour like yellow or purple. Look in some books of winter or mountainous scenes and use colours based on that. Your blue might be a little too saturated.

This image I got from a book of mountains:

Hi mister3d,
Thanks for the comments & critiques! I’ll definitely keep these points in mind, & will try to update this matte-painting in the near future, if possible! This is a finished work, so maybe I won’t make much of a change in it! But, will surely keep your valuable critiques in mind, while doing matte-paintings in the future!

No probs Kaustav, will check your message.

Also if you haven’t done so already, buy some digital matte painting tutorial downloads from gnomon workshop, they’re invaluable. You could watch them hundred times and still learn something new.

Hey Richard,
Thanx very much 4 d suggestions! Ya, I know the Gnomon Matte-Painting DVDs are really invaluable! & yes, check the PM, & reply back!

Hey Kaustav, good job

I think the 2 main issues with this matte are the colour and scale. The monochromatic blue does suit the icy mood but it is too uniform, the matte needs more colour variation to appear believable.

Maybe as well you should take some time to adjust the scale of the different elements of the scene, as they don’t knit together…for example the size of the boat compared to the lake and the houses doesn’t look right, and the mountains as well feel more like foothills than mountains because of their size.

keep it up!
