se7enthcinthanks alot Andrew …looking forward to more from you!
kreuz:thanks kreuz- I use Cinema 4d and the new Cinema4D HAIR programme…it’s very sweet, and easy to use-the cat is the second time I’ve used it! I’ve done a diagram to to show the lighting
theuni:hey uni…you got a very funny sense of humour! I know what you mean though…still human looking hair…but hey, it’s just an excuse to learn the programme!
mdavid:thanks Marky Mark!
POONKS:thanks POONKS! cute avatar BTW!
MARIAM:Careful Mariam,
he bites worse than human catty!

thanks again everyone! shakes

#585

kreuz was interested how the lighting/ reflections were achieved. here’s a little diagram

#586

ROFL, looks like I have a new wallpaper for my work PC.

I’m not 100% sure I understand the lighting setup though.
How do you assign lights to the hair only? (assuming Maya/Max plugins work the same which I think they do).

Also, how do the large/small spheres affect the lighting?

#587

with Cinema4D you can choose to exclude certain objects being lit-here I’ve stopped the cat and back drop from being lit by the hair light.

I’m no expert, but the large sphere is seen by GI only, the smaller one creates the reflection, if I understand it right. it’s explained in better detail at Anders Kjellberg’s site, under tutorials http://cartesiuscreations.com/

hope that makes sense…feel free to ask more if you’re confused!

#588

Hmm I’m still midly confused but I think the time and my tiredness have a lot to do with that.
The results of the two-sphere technique are brilliant.
I’m not sure if that would work as well in Max but I think I will test it, if only to get a better understanding of it.

I need to do some digging around in Max because I can’t seem to find a way to setup lights for the hair only.
I can block lights from affecting objects and have already got some for my eyes, skin only.
Having seperate lights for the hair would be a big step forward, so… fingers crossed.

Thanks for sharing these techniques Shakes.

#589

any time mate…good luck with it!

#590

Effectively, very effective lighting John… that works so good

#591

nice light methods , use shpere to generate GI illumination , great job
and the fur is really really awesome , but i never use C4D haha…
anyway , keep it ,

#592

MAn, you’re going from funny to funnier! Your creatures are crazy, I wonder what you will come up with next? more more more!!:bounce:

#593

“if your hair could not only look alien like but also would behave like it… like growing in triangles or forming out funny shapes… hell I don`t know how alien hair could look like.”

That’s an interesting idea…would be really cool to see what your imagination would come up with along those lines…like the two tail dog-thing.

Oh actually my second thought was, “That’s a nice color bounce on the surface beneath the cat…wonder how many test renders that took.” Anyhow, excellent work.

#594

Thanks for the lighting diag. Interesting what you can do C4D. Oh, and I’m locking up my pantry, he’s looking hungry.

#595

Hey pal,

just for the round off… how about designing a can of cat food for your alien garfield  Or maybe install him one big can on the back with a tube running to his mouth… constant eating.

#596

Lemog:thanks Lemog…still getting over your latest update…wowee!
kreuz:no worries kreuz, glad you found it interesting!
thierry2005:thanks heaps Thierry…glad you’re having a laugh at them!
oceanbluesky:good ideas Eric, eh! might hava a little experiment…the pink colour bounce, was a happy accident! I think I did about 30 test renders getting the hair right though!
MT Cup:thanks MT! yep, it sure is interesting what different programmes offer.
theuni:love that idea stephan…gonna run with it…alien cat food container…tops!

had fun last night, met Robert Mack aka DaddyMackfor lotsa beers,ouch-he’s a 3d lecturer in Sydney, teaching Max-very nice bloke, and hugely clever. I’m going to do a show and tell at his class!

back to Doggy texturing! cheers, shakes
