simple exterior
The iray cometh
Nice tests Dagon. Is iRay in CPU mode as well?
BTW, I give up trying it in max, I also get a black output. I tried the scene you uplod, it keeps rendering for a while but output black. The last try I would do is finding some output shader that could output the rendered image without max’s frame buffer, does anybody know if it exists?
simple interior with geolights
how you can see in all of these test iray is at lest as fast as vray-rt, if not faster (2-3x in some scenes)
i can share the interior and the japanese scene if you want to test it yourself
p.s.
there will be a sp2 for vray-rt soon, they claims it is much faster then the actual one, we will see…
yes, cpu mode for both
keep in mind that a single gtx 480 shold be 10x faster
have you tried with standalone, i can send you a simple mi file to test
Those are great tests, what CPU are you using? I am surprised how similar they look.
One thought I have is that added CPUs are very expensive. To upgrade from an i7 to a dual cpu Xeon is not cheap. Getting a second, third, or fourth video card is much cheaper, even if you have to buy a really expensive power supply. So to have to add that to the 10x speedup. I have seen about a 70% speedup per additional GPU.
it’s a dual-quad xeon 2.27Ghz
yep they look quite similar, for vray-rt i’m using depth 10 and gi depth 10
iray depth is unlimited
i forget to enable the reflective caustics in vray-rt (they are on by default in iray)
the light (exept for the area light ones) comes from a 11.500x5.750 HDRI
a tip for iray, it’s better to disable the exposure control and do it in post
simple geometry with a surface shader, in this case i used the “glow” shader in the arch&design
Nice tests Dagon,
2 questions :
-
It seems the AA on the geolights are less than the image itself? Is this true and if so, what is the reason?
-
What is the reason you are doing this in CPU mode? Is iray in CPU mode faster than CPU rendering without iray?
cheers!

the AA in the geolights (and in the visible lights) is not less, it is only less in a 0>1 range of the image, this is due to the high dinamic rage of the light (think like it is emitting 10000 but it is visible ina a 0>1 range)
this happens in real photography too, where the aliasing is covered by the glow -
i wanted to test iray and vray-rt in the same condicions, vray-rt for gpu is not out yet, so the only way was to use the cpu
iray is much faster in GPU mode, especially with the new fermi (a single gtx 480 is at least 12x faster than a single i7 2.8)
and there will be the hybrid computation soon (CPU+GPU)
Thanks Dagon for the clear awnsers.
Im looking forward to iray being officially released within Maya. Hope it will be done in a servicepack instead of maya2012. But knowing Autodesk…
Thanks a lot Dagon1978 for the explanations. But for 3dsmax and The progressive rendering , can we just change the range of ipr_max_samples in the ctrl_ghost_settings.mi and change this value from 1000 to 10000 ?
many thanx max :buttrock: your shaders rock
i’m wondering if you can add also the “environment lighting scale” to the IBL, i have already to try how and if it works with 3ds max, but it should be helpful
here’s another test with an old maxwell scene, the HDRI comes from the Debevec Skyprobes
(Direct HDR Capture of the Sun and Sky)
