The iray cometh

#221

hey matt,

when you say cuda drivers for osx, do you mean mental images iray cuda library files or do you actaully mean nvidia cuda drivers?

Because if you mean the latter then I think i can tell you that there are as I downloaded them and have Octane renderer running on my mac! it is very cool

Was hoping to get iray going but get the errors. Runs fine on my pc, finds the dlls no probs but not on my mac :frowning:

Cheers,

Rich

"Known limitations:
On MacOSX 10.6 ā€œSnow Leopardā€, iray does not work in 32-bit mental ray. An application would crash during the plugin loading. 32-bit executables on MacOSX 10.5 are not affected.

(For 64-bit executables, on both MacOSX 10.6 and 10.5, iray will run in CPU-only mode as 64-bit CUDA runtime library is not available)."

i think the last cuda toolkit (with 64bit runtime library) was released after the iray version we have

#223

ah ok. I am running 10.6 and iray should work just not in gpu mode. This is fine but my is not working at all.

How do i get 64bit executables? I thought maya was now 64bit on mac. Is mr standalone 2011 osx version not 64bit then?

Cheers,

Rich

#224

i don’t know, maybe you could contact autodesk for that and ask if they can provide you the dlls, you can try also the mr official forum, there are many devs there, they can surely help you better than me

#225

here’s a quick test again iray vs vray-rt (sp2 this time) in cpu mode

iray cpu mode:

#226

vray-rt sp2 cpu

so yes, vray-rt sp2 seems a little bit faster now
waiting for the first implementation of iray to see how it run

#227

V-Ray RT on CPU uses OpenCL, doesn’t it? Just curious.

#228

no, vray-rt cpu is vray rt cpu, vray-rt gpu (which is not out yet) uses open-cl

#229

ah - I thought they just switch to OpenCL with the CPU for that since it’s easy to just make the switch. I guess the speed hit was too large for OpenCL on the CPU.

#230

why they should? they’ve already a native cpu renderer :curious:

this is the mies van der rohe test updated, you can compare it with these images
vray-rt cpu mode

Uploaded with ImageShack.us

for what i can see sp2 it’s faster with sun&sky, but the speed with hdri environments it’s pretty much the same (maybe a little bit better), and yes i tried both with and without dome lighting
so iray is still faster with hdri sampling, vray-rt seems faster with physical sun/sky

Quick test with a blackhawk I am working with. Did the ocean in normal mental ray. Rendered in 1min 30sec on a gtx260. I think I missed a couple shaders since they turned black. It still needs work, but its looking promising.

#232

Hi guys,

Have you seen this:

Edit: the good link would be rather this one:

#233

I have black render too… I intsalled the 257.21 driver on my GTS250 but I can’t switch off Cuda in the controm panel (for no reason???)
I just can’ttet because of CUDA?? is there any trick for that?

#234

FOUND!!

rename or delete nvcuda.dll in C:\Windows\System32
noneed to restart windows
so no more black screen for Iray

#235

This just seems to force CPU mode, check your CPU usage as iray renders.
Does anyone know of a solution that will make GPU rendering work?

edit: I am using a GTX 470 (evga) with the latest drivers, 257.21, on win7 64.
When I try to render I get this error (twice) in the output window:
IRAY 0.11 fatal: CUDA error 18:invalid texture reference

#236

I wrote a tutorial for max2011 installation
http://loran-cg.blogspot.com/2010/0…stallation.html

and some test here:
http://loran-cg.blogspot.com/2010/06/iray.html

For now, I just cant render textures map, and I am on CPU only because black screen when activating cuda on my 250 gts
Can’t render texture map.

here a couple of my rendering in iray (bunkspeed shot )
rendered in hybrid mode …

very quick render time …
did let it cook for 10mn at 2048x1150 + some post in cs5 in for teh pyros

I had no idea it could even be downloaded until I came across this thread. It’s not on the sub center that I could tell, but it’s on Autodesk’s website.

#239

Dear polygon engineer, What is your favorite workflow for GPU rendering? exported obj in Octane or Maya/Iray?

#240

Hello everyone

After much fiddling around, I finally got iRay running with Maya 2011 Hotfix 2 today.
The good location for the 3 files that are the subject of this thread have to go in

/usr/local/mi/lib

The really bad news is we’re still waiting for a 64-bit version of the CUDA driver in order to fully take advantage of…
If anyone happens to have version 3.1 of the CUDA driver and it happens to be 64-bit, please post some results or thoughts.
